BBC, Disney Announce That Future 'Doctor Who' Seasons Will Air on Disney+ Outside the UK

The BBC teamed up with Disney with the goal of bringing the future episodes of "Doctor Who" to Disney+, as per The Verge.

The said streaming platform will now be the new exclusive home of the popular sci-fi series outside the UK and Ireland.

BBC Will Continue to Show 'Doctor Who' in the UK and Ireland

Beginning November 2023, new episodes of "Doctor Who" will be available on Disney+. The series will be released to more than 150 markets, including the US.

Meanwhile, in UK and Ireland, BBC will continue to stream the sci-fi series through its own channels and streaming platform, iPlayer.

With this announcement, global audiences will be able to enjoy new episodes of "Doctor Who." The series' release on November 2023 even coincides with its 60th anniversary.

The news about the series' move to Disney+ seems to validate circulating rumors. The rumors said that BBC is trying to find ways to have the show streamed in other platforms.

Meanwhile, it seems to be perfect timing for Disney as according to Engadget, the company is looking for established shows to stream in its platform.

With its global fanbase, the world's longest-running sci-fi series is certainly a perfect addition to the shows of Disney+ that will draw a big number of global viewers.

According to TechCrunch, it seems that both BBC and Disney are hoping that new and old Whovians will head to Disney+ to watch "Doctor Who."

It's a smart move for Disney+ to bring the popular British show to its platform as it aims to secure around 215-245 million subscribers by 2024.

By next year, the streaming platform is also planning to expand the streaming service that it offers to over 160 countries.

It can be recalled that as an initial move for the expansion, Disney+ launched their streaming service in 16 markets across the Middle East and North Africa in June.

'Doctor Who' Can be Watched by 150 Markets Around the World

In a statement, Disney+ president Alisa Bowen said, "We're excited by the opportunity to bring new seasons of this beloved franchise exclusively to Disney+ and introduce the show to the next generation of audiences in more than 150 markets around the world.

Bowen further added that the sci-fi series is a "perfect addition" to the increasing number of content on the streamer's catalog. Likewise, she says that the addition of the series to the streamer's catalog will make it a home for exceptional storytelling.

As of this writing, it is unknown yet if the streamer will also include previous episodes of the show. This includes the post-2005 revival and its original 1963-1989 run. Likewise, it is unclear whether the streamer will also show any of its spinoffs.

As part of the show's 60th anniversary, the 10th Doctor David Tennant will reprise his role. He will be replacing the 13th Doctor, which was played by Jodie Whittaker. Taking over Tennant is "Sex Education" actor Ncuti Gatwa.

A new logo for the series was also unveiled by BBC. It's a retro-styled logo inspired by the time when Tom Baker portrayed the Doctor.
