Gluten-Free Diet Not Totally Safe

In recent years many diets have been made to fight fat and obesity. Much of the diets that have been made have yet to stand to medical analysis and trial. A study shows that gluten-free diet is not totally safe.

Gluten-free diet is one of the many diets that are popular in the US. Gluten-free diet is recommended on people who have celiac disease. However, even those who don't have the disease are into it as well.

Those who are into gluten-free diet say that it reduces inflammation. This however has yet to be proven scientifically. Right now there is 67 percent more Americans into gluten-free diet, going above that of the numbers into it in 2013.

Gluten-free diet uses rice flour as a substitute for products like wheat and barley. Rice though is known to accumulate toxic compounds found in chemical fertilizers such as arsenic and mercury. A study made by Maria Argos from the University of Illinois at Chicago is looking for a link between gluten-free diet and toxic compounds in blood and urine.

73 participants in the study have been into gluten-free diet from 2009 to 2014. The age ranges of the participants have been from six to 80 years old. The 73 is part of the 7,471 who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, according to UIC News Center.

The study has found that those who are into gluten-free diet have a higher amount of arsenic in their urine. Mercury has also been found in their blood. Arsenic levels are said to be twice higher than those who are not into gluten-free diet, as Science Daily reports.

Further study would be made if the levels have health effects on those who are into gluten-free diet. So far Argos has said that the consequences of being on a gluten-free diet aren't completely known yet. While that is being determined, the study so far shows that gluten-free diet is not totally safe. An alternative treatment for lupus has a better chance of outcome.
