Twitter Edit Button — Is It a Good Idea?

The Twitter edit button was first announced on April 1, April Fool's Day. Apparently, a lot of users have mixed assumptions about it.

Twitter casually and effortlessly tweeted. "We are working on an edit button". Of course, numerous users took it as a joke. However, today proves that Twitter was indeed serious with its tweet. The company then retweeted its original post with a caption, "Ps: we weren't joking."

The company also clarified in today's announcement that the Twitter edit button is not from a poll. This statement is a nod as Elon Musk tweets a poll on his account asking everyone if they want a Twitter button.

Before the poll, one Twitter exec was already vocal about his disapproval.

Twitter's co-founder, Jack Dorsey, has been publicly known for saying no to the Twitter edit button. Dorsey was asked by a Twitter user way back in 2017 if users are going to get the Twitter edit button in 2020, and he simply said "no."

The Twitter co-founder stated, "The reason there's no edit button, there hasn't been an edit button traditionally is we started as an SMS text messaging service. So, as you all know, when you send a text, you can't really take it back. We wanted to preserve that vibe and that feeling in the early days." Dorsey proceeded to reason that some users want to have a Twitter edit button because they want to fix a certain grammar or spelling change.

However, in an instance that a person tweets something, the tweet gets retweeted, and then an hour later, that person completely changes the content of that tweet, it will result in a form of misinformation. This is also one of the reasons why a lot of Twitter users are okay with not having a Twitter edit button because it holds an individual accountable.

Twitter Execs: Jack Dorsey, Elon Musk, and Parag Agrawal
