Motorola has been rumored to be bringing a low-cost Moto X to the market to compete with mid-ranged Android smartphones. The company has just accidentally leaked the device on its website.
There have been rumors of a low-cost and mid-range Moto X for a good while now, but this shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Motorola's CEO, Dennis Woodside said that the Moto X would be one of many devices his company would release this year when he spoke at an AllThingsD conference back in August.
The company has already released its DROID family of smartphones for Verizon. It has launched its flagship Moto X on all four major carriers in the U.S. and it now appears that Motorola is planning to attack the low-end front with the Moto G.
The Moto G has recently been referred to as the Motorola DVX, a mid-range smartphone that would feature a 4.5-inch display (no Super AMOLED so it could keep costs down), have the same X8 computing system found in the Moto X and would also offer users some of the Moto X's most popular features, such as its 'Touchless Control" feature. The feature allows users to simply state the phrase: "Ok Google Now" and issue a command. The smartphone's sensors automatically wake the phone, open Google Now, and perform whatever task you throw its way (as long as it's supported) without ever touching the smartphone. The DVX is also rumored to have removable back plates like its larger sibling to allow it to be somewhat customizable.
The DVX looks like it will be officially called the Moto G. A tipster noticed that Motorola had accidentally posted the handset's name and a link on the company's website before quickly taking it down. Motorola is expected to announce the smartphone in the coming weeks, just in time for the very lucrative holiday shopping season. The latest rumors claim that the smartphone will launch somewhere in the $200 to $250 price rage, without a contract. Carriers would likely sell the handset at a much lower price when getting a customer to sign a new 2-year contract.
