Xiaomi has officially taken the wraps off a colorful new smartphone called the Redmi 2, again targeting the budget sector of the smartphone market.

The rumor mill has been buzzing intensively as of late in anticipation of the next Xiaomi smartphone, with various reports pointing at the release of a Xiaomi Redmi 1S successor. The day has now come and the company has made its latest smartphone official, introducing the new Xiaomi Redmi 2.

Xiaomi has seen increasing success in recent years, growing to become the world's fourth smartphone maker. The company makes decent handsets with affordable price tags, and Xiaomi devices usually fly off store shelves in no time, breaking record after record in terms of sales.

The new Xiaomi Redmi 2 comes in a colorful array of options to suit various tastes and preferences, and comes with decent specifications on board. More specifically, the smartphone sports a 4.7-inch IPS display with an HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and packs a 64-bit quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor under the hood, clocked at 1.2GHz and paired with Adreno 306 graphics and 1GB of RAM.

Other specs of the new Xiaomi Redmi 2 include 8GB of internal storage capacity, microSD card support for additional memory of up to 32GB, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front shooter, and a 2,200 mAh battery to keep things up and running. The handset is LTE-enabled, has dual-SIM support, and runs MIUI 6 on the software side.

As previously mentioned, the new Xiaomi Redmi 2 comes as the successor to last year's popular Redmi 1S, and is shaping up to be one of the best value-for-money handsets currently populating the mid-range category of the smartphone market.

The Xiaomi Redmi 2 will launch in China on Jan. 9, sporting a price tag of 699RMB (around $112). It remains unclear at this point when the smartphone will hit other markets, but the company is expected to offer more information soon. While the initial launch will be in China, the Redmi 2 should see a wider release.
