LG G Watch R2 smartwatch with 4G connectivity reportedly coming at MWC 2015

LG is reportedly gearing up to launch its first 4G smartwatch at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015 as the LG G Watch R2.

In addition to the 4G cellular connectivity, the fact that this smartwatch is expected to come as the successor to the current LG G Watch R suggests that it will also come with a circular form factor.

The wearable device market is going strong and increasingly gaining momentum, and things are expected to heat up even further next year. While in 2014 we already saw a number of bigwig companies joining the race with all sorts of smartwatches and other smart devices, 2015 is expected to bring even more action on this front. Apple will finally release its Watch next year, and the Android Wear ecosystem will surely get more devices as well.

LG is apparently one of the manufacturers that will expand their wearable device portfolio next year. The company already released two wearables this year with its LG G Watch and the round-shaped G Watch R (pictured above), and a new report out of Korea now claims that an LG G Watch R2 is already en route.

The report in question comes from Business Korea (via GforGames) and claims that LG will unveil its new smartwatch at the MWC 2015 trade show, which takes place in February.

Citing industry sources, the publication notes that the next-generation smartwatch from LG will come as the company's first 4G-enabled smartwatch, which means it will give some real competition to the 3G-enabled Samsung Gear S. As previously mentioned, LG's next wearable gadget will apparently be called the LG G Watch R2, indicating that it will be a direct successor to the round-shaped G Watch R, not the rectangular G Watch.

No other details are available at this point regarding this purported LG G Watch R2, but it will be interesting to see how the company will handle battery efficiency with 4G connectivity on the smartwatch. Wearables already suffer from poor battery life, and cellular connectivity will require even more juice.

If this report turn out to be accurate and LG is indeed gearing up to unleash a new 4G-enabled smartwatch at MWC 2015, more information should surface shortly.
