Moto 360 rules Android Wear, grabs highest market share for the platform

Motorola's Moto 360 circular smartwatch reportedly leads the way when it comes to Android Wear adoption, according to market research firm Canalys.

Google formally launched its Android Wear platform for wearable devices back in June this year. At the time, Android Wear touted three smartwatches as its launch vehicles: the LG G Watch, the Samsung Gear Live and the Moto 360. While the first two made their debut in June, however, the Moto 360 was delayed until September.

Nevertheless, Motorola's smartwatch drew lots of attention due to its classical, round-shaped form factor, and has become quite popular since its debut. In fact, many believe that the Moto 360 is the best Android Wear offering out there, and new data from Canalys seems to confirm the claim.

"Nearly 5 million smart and basic wearable bands shipped in Q3 2014, with total unit shipments increasing 37% quarter on quarter as Android Wear made its mark for the first time. Motorola Mobility's Moto 360 was by far the most successful of the initial Android Wear devices, accounting for over 15% of the smart band market according to Canalys estimates," reads a press release on Tuesday, Nov. 18.

"Despite being supply-constrained, its appealing design helped it to easily out-ship other Android Wear products. LG has responded to early interest in the Moto 360 by quickly adopting a circular display with the G Watch R. Meanwhile, Samsung remained the overall smart band market leader, and the company has already begun to experiment with larger display sizes and cellular connectivity with the Gear S, its sixth smart band."

Even more impressive is the fact that the Moto 360 didn't hit commercial availability until September, which means that it had just one month of sales in the third quarter. If the Moto 360 continues to be in such high demand, it should see amazing sales figures in the fourth quarter.

Samsung, meanwhile, is still the number one vendor, as Canalys points out. On the other hand, Samsung has several smartwatches on the market, and most of them don't run Android Wear.

It remains to be seen just how things will evolve next year for all smart device makers and products, but the Moto 360 will likely keep seeing high demand. The Apple Watch will also make its debut in 2015, and is expected to be a hit among iFans.
