The Porsche 911 turns 50 this year: Special edition pre-orders open

Porsche is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its hallowed 911 sports car this year and the company has officially begun taking preorders in the UK for the special-edition 911 that will be produced to mark the jubilee.

The special edition 911 is visually very similar to the 911 Carrera S, but with a wider backside, which evokes the Carrera 4 more than anything. The car is packed with numerous retro styling accents in addition to more modern touches, like 20-inch matte black wheels and chrome throughout.

"The Porsche 911 resolves apparent contradictions like no other sports car - such as between tradition and innovation or between exclusivity and high social acceptance, and of course between performance and efficiency. And so, Porsche is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 911 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt with a special anniversary model based on the 911 Carrera S," the company said in a statement.

"Like the original 911, the 911 50th Anniversary Edition is a coupé with a flat-six rear engine and rear wheel drive. Its efficient performance, active sport suspension - and special body have current relevancy: the anniversary 911 features the wide body, which is typically reserved for the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models. This special edition will be limited to 1963 cars, a number that represents the year of the 911 world premiere."

Under the hood, the Porsche 911 50th anniversary edition does not disappoint. The car boasts a 3.8-liter V6 engine that generates 430 horsepower. It can go 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds, has a top speed of 186 mph and utilizes a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The special edition Porsche 911 is by no means cheap. The car has a starting price tag of $124,100, which does not include the destination charge, another $950. It will be available in graphite grey, geyser grey metallic as well as black monochrome.
