LG working on always-on, voice-controlled smartphone?

LG apparently has a revolutionary smartphone in the works, which will feature always-on voice activation, negating the need for users to use buttons to operate the device.

It seems LG intends on ditching buttons altogether in favor of voice controls for an upcoming smartphone that will release in 2014.

According to a new report which cites multiple sources, LG intends on "launching a new Android smartphone with always-on voice commands in 2014. However, unlike the voice commands employed by digital assistant services like Apple's Siri or the Google Now search, LG will be implementing voice command more broadly for navigation functionality."

The always-on technology will reportedly let smartphones respond to the voice of the owner and simple inputs like "hello" would be all that is required to get the device spinning into action.

The site's sources have also let on that the voice-controlled functionality for smartphones would be beneficial, especially since it would let users operate the handset easily without physically touching the screen.

The always-on voice command concept is not a new one, but it is nevertheless challenging for device makers as the feature may compromise on battery efficiency. There could also be difficulty in distinguishing background noise from voice commands.

Apparently, Qualcomm's much-touted new Snapdragon 800 processor has been designed to facilitate the always-on voice activation. It is likely that it will play a prominent role in LG's upcoming technology for smartphones.

"Originally, we had thought that the feature [always-on voice capability] would be limited to select voice commands, like Google Now, but it seems that LG is tapping into the hardware feature to make its phones more adaptive" notes GottaBeMobile.

Moreover, per CNET, Qualcomm has assured that the Snapdragon 800 can handle the always-on feature without the battery life being affected negatively.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor is anticipated to reach smartphones later this year. This implies that it would be able to fuel LG's voice-controlled device when it releases sometime in 2014.

With other device manufacturers also expected to deploy the Snapdragon 800 processor, chances are that other upcoming smartphones may include the always-on voice functionality as well.
