Discord Outage: Is Discord Down?

Discord users experienced a problem with the platform's messaging feature. Discord users took to social media and shared their problems, only to find out there were a lot of them experiencing problems in Discord messaging.

Discord stated that the original problem was detected in their messaging and push notification features. However, after a few hours, less and less users were able to log in their accounts. The platform then resulted in a full blown Discord outage.

Discord's official Twitter account first posted jokingly saying "time to go outside everyone".

However, the following tweet was a post addressing their users that they have recognized the problem and are trying to fix it.

Discord tweeted, "We're aware of an issue causing message failures and are working on a fix.

Apologies for the disruption & thx for hanging tight!".

What Caused the Discord Outage?

The problem was first detected around 12 p.m. EST. In the recent incident report by Discord, "We are currently investigating an increase in API Errors and Push Notification Errors."

After the minor error, the platform stated that the recovery appears to have restored service to normal operation.

Discord also added that oncall Engineering will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that the service is fully restored. Just right after a few minutes of resolving the issue, another problem was detected.

Discord stated, "while monitoring this issue a new issue has occurred causing a major outage of the API. Oncall Engineering is working to correct this situation" which resulted in a widespread major outage.

As reported by Polygon, after almost 3 hours of Discord malfunctioning, all services and features in the platform are restored and fully operational. This isn't the first outage Discord has experienced this year.

Discord has experienced a widespread API outage on January 26, a more significant interruption. The outage in January and this recent outage has users experiencing the same problems,an interruption in messaging and logging in problems.

Discord also had an outage last month in February, which trended onTwitter. However, the interruption was quickly restored after 20 mins.

Spotify and Discord appear to be experiencing outages and downtime at the same time. Spotify, a music and podcast streaming service with nearly 400 million active users worldwide, has been experiencing login issues on both the mobile and desktop versions of the app recently.

When Spotify was down, Spotify login became unavailable. The services of Spotify quickly became operational and features became fully functional after an hour. Unlike Discord, Spotify did not make any detailed report on what the error was on their system.

However, The Verge reported that this may be caused by the Traffic Detector, as announced by Google Cloud.

Google Cloud status stated:

"The issue with Traffic Director has been confirmed to be caused by a recent release; the release has been rolled back and customers can now start using Traffic Director. We have identified a probable root cause and will be publishing an Incident Report within the next several days.

The issue with Cloud Load Balancing, Cloud Networking, Traffic Director has been resolved for all affected projects as of Tuesday, 2022-03-08 12:42 US/Pacific.
