'Role Players' Will Tell the All-encompassing D&D story

According to XTR, Role Players will tell the game's origins, its rapid rise in popularity, the cult-like devotion of its players, and even the Satanic panic among some parents that claimed the game was the work of the devil during the '80s.

Moreover, the film will include interviews with celebrity who are fans of the game, as well as archival footage that has never been seen before, according to Digital Trends.

The documentary will be directed by Morgan Jon Fox ("The One You Never Forget") and will be produced by Ted Speaker ("Sword of Trust").

Bryn Mooser, Kathryn Everett, Justin Lacob and Abazar Khayami are executive producers for XTR.

"As a director, I am excited to tell the story of D&D, which at its heart is about the true power of learning to work as teams, consuming and creating inclusive narratives," said Fox.

He added that there's nothing more exciting than a legendary game that rose to fame with a little help from the era of Satanic Panic.

"Through its wildly different levels, times, adventures and possibilities, D&D created its own universe and community," said Lacob.

Moreover, Lacob added that capturing the imagination of gamers, misfits, geniuses, and rebels had a lasting impact on culture and lives of the people outside the game.

No Release Date Yet for 'Role Players' but, Are You Excited?

XTR has not announced a release date yet for Role Players but fans of the game might be looking forward to see the film on the big screen.

Despite not having a release date yet, filming has already begun for the documentary. Digital Trends said that the film is well-timed as the new live-action movie, "Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" will hit theaters in 2023. Meanwhile, in 2024, Dungeons and Dragons will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Dungeons and Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) originally designed by Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson. The game was first published in 1974 by Tactical Studies Rules, Inc.

It has been published by Wizards of the Coast since 1997. Dungeons and Dragons was derived from miniature wargames, with a variation of the 1971 game Chainmail serving as the initial rule system.

The game's publication is commonly recognized as the beginning of modern role-playing games and the role-playing game industry.

XTR, a global nonfiction entertainment studio founded in 2019, was established by Bryn Mooser. They are after focusing documentary-based storytelling. They have since produced and financed over 80 documentaries, as per Deadline report.

According to Super Hero Hype, XTR's list of productions includes last year's "Ascension", which received an Oscar nod for Best Documentary Feature. In addition, the studio's first TV series, "They Call Me Magic," premiered on Apple TV+ last month.
