The PlayStation 5 (PS5) has been having a hard time keeping up with its overwhelming demand since it first saw the light of day in Nov. 2020.

Apart from the flooding demand from millions of gaming folks out there, the PS5 maker Sony also had to go through the prevailing supply chain mess of its chips.

New PS5? Sony's Registration in Japan

Despite that, though, the tech giant reportedly registered a brand new PS5 model in Japan, as per a news story by GameSpot.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan reportedly awarded Sony with the certification for the new hardware of the PS5.

If we're going to be more specific, Sony filed for a new construction design for the next-gen PlayStation, wherein it sports updated wireless communication and radio equipment.

GameSpot noted in its report that the certification of Sony did not specifically mention the PS5. But it carries the code CF1-1200, which could likely pertain to an unreleased model of its gaming console.

It is worth noting that the latest generation of the PlayStation consistently falls under the CFI-1XXX model number. So, the new numbering, CFI-1200, could heavily suggest that Sony is already working on the next version of its hit gaming console.

PS5 Redesign 2022

According to a recent report by DBLTAP, Sony disclosed way back in May 2021 that it would be working on a redesign of the PS5 console sometime in 2022.

However, the Japanese console maker has yet to reveal details regarding the anticipated redesign of the next-gen PlayStation.

It is worth pointing out that Sony made a few redesigns to its gaming console since its debuted way back in 2020.

An employee prepares the new Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console for a customer on the first day of its launch, at an electronics shop in Kawasaki, Kanagawa prefecture on November 12, 2020.

For instance, the first PS5 redesign in 2021 made some internal changes, such as the additional thumbscrews on the base stand. Not to mention that Sony also successfully made the gaming console lighter than its initial weight. The tech giant went on to make its heatsink smaller as well.

However, since the PS5 launched, its look has remained unchanged, making the recent redesign exclusively on its internals.

The latest certification of Sony in Japan suggests that the redesign in 2022 would be somewhat similar to what we saw in 2021, wherein there were no external updates.

The internal redesign that the PS5 might be getting this year must be the solution for Sony to the ongoing chip shortage, which limits its supply since its release.
