Lollipop Chainsaw Is Getting a Remake — When Will It Be Released?

The zombie-killing Starlings are coming back in 2023.

That's right. video game publisher Dragami Games recently confirmed that a full remake of the cult-classic video game, Lollipop Chainsaw, is coming sometime in 2023, per IGN.

Dragami Games is led by Lollipop Chainsaw's original game producer, Yoshimi Yasuda, per Moby Games.

Lollipop Chainsaw Remake Details

Yasuda mentioned in the remake's announcement, which he posted through his official Twitter page, that the original development staff of Lollipop Chainsaw purchased it from Kadokawa Games, the publisher of the game in Japan, per the Lollipop Chainsaw wiki.

After which, the original development staff decided to develop a remake to allow players who cannot play the original to experience it on the latest platforms.

Additionally, the game will be developed by "a combination of the original development staff, Yasuda, and the new development staff from Dragami Games.

Yasuda and the game's original development staff also added that they have contacted Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment about the remake's development, and have received the company's support since.

Interestingly, Warner Bros. was also the original game's publisher outside Japan.

As for the game's features, it will mostly be faithful to the original, but it will have new features that separate the remake from the original game.

Thanks to the advancements provided by next-gen consoles, Yasuda said that the remake would feature more realistic graphics. Whether this means that the remake will ditch the cartoonish look for a more true-to-life one is unknown.

Unfortunately, the remake will not have some, if not most, of the original game's music due to music licensing issues. As such, aside from a few licensed tracks, the remake's music will consist of new ones with a few licensed tracks.

Lollipop Chainsaw Remake Availability And Price

Yasuda mentioned that the remake will be released sometime in 2023, though he didn't disclose a specific release date. He also didn't share the platforms the game will be available on.

However, since he did mention that the game will use more realistic graphics thanks to the power of "new-gen hardware," the game is likely to come out on next-gen consoles as well as the PC.

Yasuda didn't mention how much the remake will be on release.

Lollipop Chainsaw Original Game Details

Lollipop Chainsaw is a hack-and-slash video game released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in June 2012. The game follows the story of Juliet Starling, a student cheerleader from her local high school that got caught in a zombie outbreak.

This outbreak is led by a Goth student and five zombie overlords representing types of music.

She is also assisted by her boyfriend, Nick Carlyle, who was supposed to meet Juliet's family for the first time if the outbreak never happened.

The game mostly involves Juliet mowing down hordes of zombies using her chainsaw, with Nick and her family helping her along the way.

The game received mixed to lukewarm reviews, with IGN giving the game a 5/10 for being incredible on paper only.

"Lollipop Chainsaw doesn't even attempt to differentiate itself from the genre, and most of what it does try new in the realm of its characters and writing ultimately ends up taking away from an incredible-on-paper action game," IGN said.

Despite the reviews, players of the game loved it due to the game's graphics, challenging areas, and its nonsensical but somewhat fun story, per user reviews on IMDb.
