Can an Already Deleted Instagram Post be Recovered?

The answer to that question, according to Instagram, is yes. You can recover content that you have deleted from the social media app. However, not all types of content can be recovered, but we will get to that later.

So which types of content can you recover once you have deleted them? They are the following:

  • Photos
  • Videos
  • Reels
  • Instagram Stories

You should take note that recently deleted photos, videos, and Reels will be automatically deleted for good after 30 days should you wish not to recover them. For Instagram Stories, they will be deleted after 24 hours if the Story is not in your archive.

How to Find and Restore Recently Deleted Instagram Content

How to find your recently deleted Instagram content is simple and straightforward. First, head to your profile and the top the three horizontal bars in the top right corner. After that, select Your Activity.

From there, look for Recently Deleted and you will see your recently deleted content. If you wish to filter your content to show only your Instagram Reels, for example, it is possible to do so.

Once you have selected the content you either want to restore or permanently delete, all you have to do is tap the three dots in the top right and choose either Restore or Delete. Do note that if you do not find a particular type of content you know you have deleted, there is a chance that it already went beyond the 30-day period it is allowed to stay in the Recently Deleted section.

For photos that you have chosen to delete, Instagram Help Center notes that "It may take up to 90 days to complete the deletion process after it begins." Why is this so?

"Copies of your content may remain after the 90 days in backup storage that we use to recover in the event of a disaster, software error, or other data loss event," the Help Center explains.

What You CANNOT Recover

So we have talked about which content on Instagram you can recover once you have deleted it. However, there is one you cannot recover.

According to Instagram, deleted messages cannot be restored on the app. With that in mind, make sure you think twice first before deleting a message you might regret removing later on.
