CORTE MADERA, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 27: Brand new Tesla cars sit in a parking lot at a Tesla showroom on June 27, 2022 in Corte Madera, California. The average price for a new electric car has surged 22 percent in the past year as automakers like Tesla, GM and Ford seek to recoup commodity and logistics costs.

The NHTSA is now probing two recent fatal Tesla crashes, one killed a pedestrian in California, while the other incident occurred in Florida.

The NHTSA is investigating several crashes wherein the Autopilot feature of Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) was reportedly involved.

And according to a recent report by Tech Crunch, a new unfortunate fatal crash by a Tesla vehicle is the center of an investigation by NHTSA.

The news outlet notes that a 2018 Tesla Model 3 was involved in the recent fatal crash in California, wherein a pedestrian got killed.

The Tesla Model 3 crash reportedly killed a pedestrian, according to the documents of the US safety regulator that Tech Crunch got to see.

The NHTSA investigation involving the Tesla Model 3 in California opened this July under the Special Investigation program of the safety regulatory agency.

It is to note that the special crash investigation program of the US safety regulator precisely looks at accidents from an engineering perspective or other circumstances.

As per a news story by The Verge, the NHTSA confirmed that it is also looking into the recent fatalities in Florida.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Florida Highway Patrol says that it remains to be seen if the Autopilot feature of Tesla was turned on when the fatal crash killed two passengers.

Tesla Incidents Under Probe

The giant EV maker owned by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is currently facing a probe from a total of 16 recent Tesla Autopilot crashes. The Verge notes in its story that these incidents resulted in at least 15 injuries and a single fatality.

Meanwhile, Tech Crunch reports that the special crash investigations program of NHTSA currently has 45 open cases involving various driver assistant systems or self-driving technology. And it turns out that the majority of them involve Tesla EVs, a total of 36, to be exact.

It is also worth noting that these fatal crashes reportedly occurred during nighttime in relatively dark places.

The report also notes that the Autopilot software of Tesla EVs has ignored the cones, arrows, and warning lights at the scene of these accidents.
