Nissan Leaf is Reportedly Phasing Out — Are We Seeing a New EV Soon?

Nissan Leaf is reportedly phasing out soon, marking the end of the electric vehicle (EV) pioneer, which also boasts the most affordable price tag in the all-electric segment.

The all-electric compact vehicle of Nissan, the Leaf, has been in the tightening EV maker for over a decade since it debuted in 2010. But it appears that it might be bidding farewell soon.

Nissan Leaf To Be Phased Out

As per an exclusive news story by Automotive News, the unnamed and unofficial sources disclose that the Nissan Leaf is phasing out soon.

The report says that the Japanese automaker is already preparing to phase out its first-ever all-electric vehicle. Essentially, Nissan reportedly has no plans to release a next-generation Leaf.

On top of that, the renowned carmaker, which brought us the GTR, might also ditch the iconic Leaf nameplate.

According to a recent report by The Verge, anonymous sources claim that the production of the latest Leaf EV is slowing down once we hit the mid-decade. And as such, the Leaf might only have a few more years before its rumored demise.

Nissan Leaf's 'Renewed Interest'

But on the other hand, the news outlet notes that the spokesperson of Nissan touts that there is a "renewed interest" in the pioneer compact EV.

The Nissan spokesperson, Stephen Oldham, says "we are seeing renewed interest in LEAF with the increased demand for EVs and its overall value proposition."

Oldham declined to speculate on the latest rumor. But in the words of the spokesperson of the Japanese automaker, it looks like all is well for the Leaf.

Meanwhile, according to the latest story by Inside EVs, the sales of the Leaf have been dismal since its debut more than a decade ago. It has failed to hit the sales prediction of the carmaker year after year.

The best sales year of the Nissan EV was 2014, but it only sold roughly 30,200 units in the United States. And those figures have dwindled these days to lower numbers.

Despite its underwhelming sales figures, the Leaf is undeniably one of the pioneers in the mass market all-electric market.

The Verge notes in its report that the Leaf would still be remembered as the first-ever successful mass-market electric car.

While the giant EV maker Tesla sure has a massive role in pushing for the electrification of cars, Nissan also has its fair share of introducing the green energy vehicle to the market.
