AT&T announces Moto X release date, MotoMaker customization details, video tour and more (Video)

The Moto X will launch on all four major carriers in the U.S. We now know AT&T's release date, how MotoMaker will work, and other details.

Motorola's new flagship smartphone is finally going to launch on August 23 for AT&T customers. Tech sites had been speculating on the Moto X for months leading up to its official announcement. The smartphone's most popular feature lies in its ability to be user-customizable. AT&T customers will be the only ones to design their Moto X, since the feature is exclusive to the carrier for now. The other carriers are expected to offer the service in the coming months and will only offer choice of black or white models until November.

AT&T has just announced that it will officially begin selling the Moto X on August 23 for $199.99 for the 32GB model and $249.99 for the 32GB model. Some of the Moto X's unique features include:

  • Touchless Control lets you check the weather, get directions, make a call or search for just about anything-just by saying "OK Google Now." Because you tune Moto X to your voice, it's always ready to respond to you.
  • The Quick Capture function makes the 10 megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash and 2-megapixel front-facing camera even easier to use. Just pick up your Moto X, twist your wrist twice and you're ready to shoot. Touch anywhere on the screen and you'll get an amazing shot. Its Clear Pixel technology can capture dark scenes or stop motion blur in bright light.
  • With Active Display, information efficiently appears on the screen. It doesn't interrupt and it's battery friendly. You don't have to wake up Moto X to look at the time or see your messages, satisfying that constant itch to check your phone.

AT&T will give early access to the MotoMaker service beginning on August 19 to some customers who joined its sign-up page. The carrier also explains how the MotoMaker service will work for all of its customers.

Designing your own Moto X is simple. Using Moto Maker, you can select:

  • Color options for the front and back
  • Accent colors for the power key, volume key and camera ring
  • Adding your name or short message on the back of the phone
  • Unique wallpapers
  • Custom power-on message
  • Memory capacity - 16GB or 32GB

Once you've designed and purchased your custom device, it will be assembled in the USA and shipped to you for free in four days or less, with no hassle returns.

The Moto X features a 4.7-inch 720p AMOLED HD display and is powered by a custom dual-core 1.7Ghz Snapdragon S4 Pro processor with Motorola's X8 Computing System and an Adreno 320 graphics processing unit (GPU).The Moto X ships with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, but should be updated to the latest Android 4.3 in the near future. The smartphone will be available in two storage capacities, 16GB and 32GB and includes 2GB of RAM. The rear camera is a 10-megapixel shooter and can record 1080p video, while its front-facing camera has 2 megapixels. When it comes to connectivity, the Moto X includes a 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Motorola has also included a 2,200 mAh battery .

AT&T has become the first carrier to confirm a release date, but we should be hearing from the other three in the very near future. Check out the video tour AT&T has created.
