Pagani Has Halted Its EV Plans Due to Major Issue Seen in Battery Packs

It may take some time before we can see a Pagani electric vehicle (EV).

The Italian supercar manufacturer Pagani has temporarily halted its electric car development as research conducted by the automaker showed that electric powertrains are too heavy for supercars, as per Interesting Engineering.

According to Autocar, Pagani is still committed to the development of electric cars. However, they are planning to launch it "only when customer demand dictates" and when the technology for a "fun-to-drive-and-own" car is available.

Pagani Works on V12 Engine Instead

In 2018, Pagani started working on electric car's development. Hence, four years later, the company made an announcement that it would postpone the development of EVs.

Based on the automaker's research, the electric supercar would require a 600-kilogram battery, which according to Autocar is more than half the Huayra R's total weight.

According to founder Horacio Pagani, he dreams of a 1,300 kg electric vehicle. However, with the current technology, his vision is not possible.

Horacio Pagani noted that EVs are too heavy for supercars and they "lack driving emotion."

"The challenge is to make an EV that gives good emotion like a normal ICE. Pagani isn't going to do something just with good performance, as you can do this now, but to give emotion to the driver," said Horacio Pagani.

As per Motor1, upon the postponement of the EV project, Pagani decided to work on a V12 engine instead.

The automaker will focused on producing V12-powered supercars being supplied by Mercedes-Benz.

In 2019, Horacio Pagani announced that the company will utilize the Mercedes V12 engine until 2026. The said engine will power the new Pagani C10 that will be unveiled in September.

Pagani Noted that EV Development Remains Alive

Pagani clarified that it is not fully abandoning EV development plans. The automaker's spokesperson said that the development remains very much alive.

However, it noted that at this stage Pagani have "never received any requests from customers so far for an electric car". In addition, it is not possible with the current technology.

Given the situation, the EV team at Pagani keeps on working with partners in choosing future technologies that will support the philosophy of Pagani of making light, safe and emotional vehicle.

The Pagani founder said that he never gets complacent about demand. He said that he put foremost consideration on market conditions that could affect his company since majority of the car company's customers are in financial services.

According to Autocar, Horacio Pagani is also aiming to promote greater sustainability across the industry. He also promotes low-volume, low-mileage cars such as Pagani to be considered.

The Pagani spokesperson noted that the effect of the Pagani fleet to the environment is negligible.

He added that the car company has a full commitment to ensure that their cars are as sustainable as possible, whether internal combustion or electric.

Moreover, he said that Pagani is mindful of the bigger picture, thus, the company wants to create awareness of the things the world needs to do to be more sustainable.
