Microsoft OneDrive Turns 15: Here are Its New Redesign, Features

Microsoft has breathed new life into its OneDrive app with its recent redesign.

The Washington-based tech giant released a revamped version of its OneDrive app that is said to make people's experience at work much less stressful on the app's 15th anniversary.

Microsoft mentioned that the redesign is its way of showing its gratitude to its customers for their support and feedback that helped it make "sharing and collaborating" in OneDrive the best possible experience.

Microsoft mentioned in its announcement that the redesigned Microsoft OneDrive, OneDrive Home, would allow people to resume their work easily and catch up with what they missed while they're away from work.

This promise is evidenced in the app's new features, of which the first noticeable difference is in the dashboard. OneDrive Home's new Home page resembles the dashboard in the online version of Microsoft Office.

Additionally, It has a filter by file type function that allows people using OneDrive to search for specific file types only - a function originally found in the Office web app, according to The Verge.

Microsoft mentioned that the filter by file type function will provide more efficiency to people during their time at work.

The new OneDrive Home has new features original to its redesign as well. For example, OneDrive Home's "Recent" view will now ensure that people will find the files they need to work on first.

The redesign also introduces a new feature called the "Activity Column" which allows people to look at threaded comments, @mentions, real-time coauthoring, and highlighted changes at a glance.

The new Activity Column appears can be found in OneDrive Home's "My Files" view.

In addition to the Activity Column, Microsoft has added a Quick Access section that can be found in the left navigation of the app. It contains shortcuts that allow people to find and access the places they continually work along with document libraries.

Microsoft has also added a "familiar, consistent experience" across all files by delivering a more intuitive sharing experience across Office apps, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams.

This "experience" is expected to provide a quick, robust way for people to grant others access to information, set granular sharing controls, see everyone they've shared files with, and manage access settings across individuals and groups.

The company also developed a "familiar files experience" with OneDrive Home so people can quickly locate the files they've worked on a regular basis and share them with their co-workers.

OneDrive isn't all about work. OneDrive Home now has "OneDrive Photo Story" that brings people's memories into a "private, invitation-only feed" that can be shared with family and friends. It even acts like a social media platform wherein people can comment, react, and be notified about a shared memory to "spur authentic interactions through photos that people care about."

OneDrive Home Availability And Price

Although there is no word about the price of OneDrive's revamped version, Microsoft did disclose that OneDrive Home is not yet available at the moment, with the app being scheduled for release in the coming months.

The same is somewhat true with OneDrive Photo Story. The feature is already available in Australis on the OnDrive mobile app for Android, iOS, and on web browsers. However, the US may have to wait until later this year to experience Photo Story.
