Dropbox Will Release New Beta App with Full MacOS Monterey Support Later This Year

Earlier this year, Dropbox issued a warning to Mac users regarding the compatibility problems of the app with macOS Monterey 12.3 and later because of some internal system changes, as per 9to5Mac.

Since then, users have been waiting for an update that would fix the issue. Finally, Dropbox confirmed that it would release a new public beta app with full support for MacOS Monterey and later in the early 4th quarter of the year, as per MacRumors.

Dropbox is Working on an Update for Mac Users

According to a comment of a Dropbox representative on the company's official forum, Dropbox team is currently working on an update for its Mac users. It is expected to come with full support for the newest macOS versions.

The representative confirmed that a new public beta of the Dropbox app for macOS will be available "early in Q4." This only means that the update will possible arrive sometime between October and December 2022.

Meanwhile, Dropbox requested users, who are experiencing issues, to access the app through a web browser, iOS device, or Windows PC for the time being.

Users can actually use Dropbox on Macs running macOS Monterey, however, the app will not work as it should.

For instance, users can no longer open online-only files, which are stored in the cloud. The reason behind this is macOS 12.3 no longer supports an old extension used by cloud services. This has also affected Microsoft OneDrive.

"A public beta for full support of macOS will be available in early Q4. For now, you can still double-click to open files in Finder. Everything else is working as usual," Dropbox said.

The issue only affects Macs running on macOS Monterey, as according to Dropbox, users' experience on PC devices, dropbox.com, and from the latest iOS and Android apps "remains unaffected."

Update Released in March is Still Affected by Compatibility Issue

Those who want to be the first one to get the new beta version once it arrives should turn on the option to receive "early releases" in the Dropbox app settings.

Dropbox initially promised to make this new beta app compatible with macOS Monterey available to users in March, but apparently, the company needed more time to work on it.

Dropbox released an update to its macOS app, adding support for Apple Silicon Macs, way back in March.

The version 143.4.4161 released by Dropbox for macOS supports Apple Silicon platform, which is the basis of the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Max chips.

According to the company, there's no need to reinstall the app since users will get the update automatically.

With the update, the apps that run natively on Apple Silicon "can take full advantage of the M1 chip and its variants," as per a separate report of 9to5Mac

This means the software will use less power for MacBook users, which means longer battery life.

However, despite the update released by Dropbox last March, it appears like the app is still affected by the compatibility issues with macOS 12.3 and later.
