Weta Workshop is Working on a New Lord of the Rings Video Game | Here's What We Know So Far

Weta Workshop is creating a video game with a Middle-Earth theme, and because Middle-Earth Enterprises retains the rights to the novels, Weta Workshop is free to interpret the mythology in any way they see fit.

Weta Workshop is Designing a Middle-Earth-Themed Video Game

Weta Workshop is creating a new video game based on the Middle-Earth setting from J.R.R. Tolkien's works. Weta Workshop collaborated on Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" film trilogy.

There aren't many specifics available about this new game yet, but it seems like Weta may have a lot of content to select from. According to a news release, Middle-Earth Enterprises has licensed the series' literary works, giving Weta Workshop the most creative freedom to interpret the novels' underlying mythos.

Weta's gaming studio is developing the future game in collaboration with Take-Two publishing house Private Division. Although a release date hasn't been set, Take-Two's 2024 fiscal year, which runs from April 2023 to March 2024, is anticipated to see the game's debut.

The release of this game coincides with the "Lord of the Rings" IP seeing rapid expansion. The precursor to the main plot, The "Lord of Rings: Gollum," follows the titular figure before he embarks on his epic quest with Frodo and Sam. Despite the game's anticipated release this year, Daedalic Entertainment announced a "few months" delay and hasn't yet provided a concrete release date.

A survival game based on dwarves trying to recover their home, "The Lord of the Rings: Return To Moria," was also revealed this summer for release in 2023. "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is an Amazon prequel series that takes place thousands of years before the events of "The Lord of the Rings" and is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth will debut this September.

Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition is Adapted for Use in The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying

The "Lord of the Rings" is making a comeback in 5E. The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying, a new game that modifies Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules for use in Middle-Earth, has been released by Free League Publishing. Six brand-new classes, six distinct heroic civilizations discovered in Eriador, rules for trips, wonderful artifacts, and the more subdued kind of magic present in Middle-Earth will all be included in the game.

This autumn, a Core Rulebook, and a Shire Adventures adventure module will be available for pre-order; a retail release is scheduled for the first quarter of 2023.

After receiving more than $2 million on Kickstarter, Free League Publishing released a new version of The One Ring, a Lord of the Rings Roleplaying game based on unique rules, earlier this year. The One Ring was published by Cubicle 7 until 2011 when Free League took over publishing duties.

Although not explicitly stated, the Lord of the Rings Roleplaying seems to be a new version of Adventures in Middle-Earth, the earlier 5E version of The Lord of the Rings. The permission to print Adventures in Middle-Earth with The One Ring was initially held by Cubicle 7, however, in 2019, that license was revoked.

Many Dungeon Masters used the traveling rules from Adventures in Middle-Earth in their other 5E games because of how well those rules were received. One significant distinction is that The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying concentrates on Eriador, which Adventures in Middle-Earth briefly touched upon but served as the primary setting for the new version of The One Ring.
