Reddit Opens Waitlist for Beta Platform Aiming to Make It Easier to Create Bots

Reddit made an announcement today that it is providing developers with the resources they need to create bots through a new portal that it is working on. Likewise, developers will be able to work with other third party tools.

The company announced that a waitlist will be opened for developers who are after building software for the platform. In doing do, the developers will be using a new toolkit from the company.

Reddit Aims to Build Dedicated Tools for Developers

As per The Verge, developers on Reddit are currently "operating primarily as siloed resources." These developer receive "limited resources and ad-hoc support." 

Reddit's goal is to address the issue by "building out dedicated tools for developers through its new platform," according to The Verge.

In the new portal, tools and other resources will be available for the developers' use. Reddit believes that this will empower them to create software extensions that will improve the experience in the social network, as per TechCrunch.

Accordingly, the third-party developers can easily find many tools in the platform. These tools are running discreetly in the background of subreddits.

Reddit Chief Product Officer Pali Bhat told TechCrunch that as Reddit allows UI customization, there is an expectation from the company that Redditors and moderators will act to customize their communities in order to meet their unique needs.

While extensions give useful perks that make the usage of Reddit more convenient, it also offers some essential utility, too. 

For instance, accessibility of the visually impaired is boosted due to some bots. There are also bots that provided moderators a "more comprehensive set of tools" to ensure that rules are followed and the communities are safe. 

There is a bot in Reddit known as the rampant spellcheck bots. It called users' attention when there is a misspelled word.

There are also playful bots. One of these is the Yoda bots, which invert comments into Yoda-like syntax, according to TechCrunch.

Reddit Wants to Give Users a Meaningful Experience in the Platform

The waitlist for the beta of its developer platform will be opened today, according to Reddit. To get access to the new toolkit, anyone just need to sign in. 

At first, the size of the developer portal beta will be modest. The company will observe how things will go while keeping safety in consideration. 

Reddit it planning to make the new portal for custom software available to everyone sometime next year.

Using the developer portal, Reddit aims to "break developers out of the silos" they're in right now, as per TechCrunch.

Through the new developer platform beta, the company wanted to offer them not only tool but also a centralized space to share resources.

One thing that Reddit understands is that various communities are looking for flexible and personalized ways of interacting. 

By providing support to third-party developers, it will be easier for moderators and users alike to customize their experiences on the platform.

Bhat said that company's vision is to have "a portal where users and moderators can choose which tools they want to use for their communities." In the end, they hope that it will make users' experiences more meaningful.
