Meta Accounts and Horizon Profiles Roll Out as the New Login System for Quest Users

Meta is rolling out a new login system for their virtual reality world.

Meta, the company behind the Quest Oculus VR headsets, is rolling out the new login system for VR using only one account.

This update will be made available to every user around the world. As soon as the update rolls out, Oculus users will have the ability to create their Meta account and Meta Horizon profile.

This new option is given to users to pave the way toward building the metaverse. The company envisions Meta Horizon Profile as an instrument that will allow users to express themselves in VR.

Meta Account and Meta Horizon Profiles

The new Meta account structure gives users more flexibility and freedom to choose whether they want their Instagram or Facebook to be part of their VR experience.

Users can start creating their Meta account once this new update rolls out. When it does, there will be a code that will be prompted when they put on their VR headset.

From there, they can log in to either their Facebook account, Instagram account, or email address to create a Meta account.

According to Meta, "If you use a Facebook or Instagram account to create your Meta account, both that social media account and your Meta account will be added to the same Accounts Center, which lets you unlock connected experiences like finding Instagram followers to play with in VR and using Messenger in VR."

On the other hand, if users choose to create their Meta account using their email address, they will be asked to provide their name, birthday, and age.

For users in Spain and South Korea, users must be 14 years old and older to create a Meta account, while users in other countries need to be 13 years old and older to do so.

After users have created their Meta account, they can now move forward with setting up their Meta Horizon profile. This setup is as simple as selecting a display name and a username that you like and adding a profile picture.

Transitioning to Meta Accounts

  • Oculus Account to Meta Account

According to Engadget, the VR users who continue to log in using their oculus account can only continue to do so until January 1, 2023. Beyond that, users will need to create a Meta account and Meta Horizon profile to continue using their Meta VR device.

  • Facebook Account to Meta Account

Users that access the VR world by logging in with their Facebook accounts will have the ability to set up a Meta account by just logging in with their Facebook. On the other hand, they will be given the opportunity to remove their Facebook account and replace it with their email address.

Whether or not users decide to keep using Facebook, they will still be able to access all of the prior VR purchases and downloads they have made when they decide to transition to setting up their Meta account and new Horizon profile. Additionally, the Oculus Friends, going forward, will count towards the Followers section.

Furthermore, if users choose to create their Meta account without using Facebook, they will lose the ability to easily search for their Facebook friends on the Meta VR devices.

Aside from this, users will also no longer have access to all connected experiences that require Facebook, such as using Messenger, within a virtual reality setting.
