As previously announced in this year's PAX, Gearbox itself is developing the game. It will feature three new characters, Anu, Octavio, and Fran.

According to the game's Steam page, Anu and Octavio are siblings, with Anu styling herself as an "altruistic scientist" and Octavio being the more "streetwise" of the two, per Polygon. Meanwhile, Fran, a frogurt-slinging owner of a froyo shop in the metropolis of Promethea.

The group was described as "clearly now Vault Hunter material" unlike the protagonists in the three main Borderlands games, with their main goal being to survive an invasion by weapons manufacturer Tediore and their talking guns with legs.

As with Telltale's formula, which Gearbox is probably adapting, the decisions players would make for these three lovable losers could determine their fate, Promethea, and even the world itself, per Xbox Wire

Each of the three characters comes with their own unique gadget that can help them face future challenges in exploration and various situations. Anu can scan objects using her glasses, while Octavio can pull up people's social media info and hack some devices using his wrist-mounted ECHOdex. Meanwhile, Fran can use the built-in accessories in her hoverchair to "punch her way through problems or freeze them solid."

Additionally, the game's events take place within a year following the events of Borderlands 3, which will allow players to encounter and visit familiar faces and locales. IGN mentioned in its article that a leaked description about the game hinted that gamers might see some returning faces as well, although it wasn't made clear if they would be from the original Tales from the Borderlands game or the main games.
