[RETRO GAMING] Do You Remember the Nintendo 64 Game GoldenEye 007?

Most film-licensed games are the worst possible video games to play on any platform due to how unwanted they are or how awkward it handles. Take games like Ghostbusters, Rambo: The Video Game, and the more recent Fast & Furious: Showdown video as an example.

However, there are some film-licensed games out there that are worth playing, and one of them came out during the late 90s. It was so memorable that it is still talked about with sweet nostalgia, especially when the "Geddan" meme was born in the mid to late 2000s.

This is how Goldeneye 007 became one of the greatest games to ever be released on the Nintendo 64 and in gaming.

Goldeneye 007 History, Plot, And Gameplay

Goldeneye 007 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Rareware, more popularly known as Rare, and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, per the Goldeneye Fandom.

The game apparently was a challenge to make. According to Nintendo Life, the core Goldeneye development team consisted of a dozen people, with most of them not having no experience in video game development.

As it is a film-licensed game, Goldeneye 007 puts players into the shoes of MI6's most famous operative, James Bond, in a rough recreation of the movie's story. Players can move Bond around wherever they want. To aim and fire the equipped weapon, players will have to hold a button for a crosshair to appear and then precisely aim for their target with the analog stick. However, players rely on the game's normal aiming controls that allow them to run and gun at will.

However, the game almost became a Virtua Cop-style on-rails shooter as the design document read that the game would be similar to Virtua Cop in terms of gameplay.

Fortunately, Martin Hollis, the game's director, told Edge Magazine in Christmas of 1997 that they played Doom a lot, which gave them ideas on how the game will come out.

One other aspect of the game, and perhaps its most popular, was its multiplayer mode, wherein players can challenge each other locally through a four-way split screen - a feat "mostly impossible" in the gaming industry today.

In this mode, players can choose a character to play as and then mow each other down in arena-style maps. However, this mode was made at the last minute, with just six weeks to make before the game was launched.

Goldeneye 007's Legacy

Goldeneye 007's multiplayer isn't the only one that left a huge impression on many young gamers at the time. According to Android Authority, the game's design, smart enemy AI, and gameplay made it one of the greatest video game classics of all time.

The game was hugely successful that Rare was rumored to be working on a remastered version.

Inverse reported that one of the two active gamertags that have unlocked achievements in the game's rumored remake, which was BIGsheep, belongs to the company's lead engineer, James Thomas.

Unfortunately, any progress for the game has been delayed due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, per IGN.
