Google Crashes when Searching for Number of iOS Emojis: Fixed

People on the Internet have found a series of phrases in the same premise which causes the Google search engine to crash. When they enter questions about the number of emojis on iOS, Google displays a server error.

According to BleepingComputer, they were able to reproduce the crash by using Google search sites and the mobile app as well. The phrases that were searched included "how many emojis on iOS," "how many emojis on Apple," "how many emojis on windows," "how many emojis on lumia," how many emojis in iOS," and "how many emojis inside iOS."

What was Causing the Crash?

At first, they thought that the crash was impacting a specific domain from a certain country, which is Google.co.nz when it was mentioned in YCombinator Hacker News.

Some have speculated that it was a specific web page that caused the server error. They were curious to know which particular domain was causing the crash. However, many others who are just as curious decided to look deeper into the issue.

The Teal Mango mentioned that a Reddit user, u/gottago_gottago stated that the crash might be caused by Emojipedia.com. When the domain is entered directly on Google, the search engine will crash as well.

Update: It's Been Fixed

As of 10:51 a.m. ET, the server error no longer appears when the phrases involving the number of emojis in the iOS, have been resolved. Contrary to the expected reactions, some users were disappointed about the bug fix.

A few Redditors stated that they wanted to try it out for themselves, but read about it too late. Others have resorted to the search engine Bing as the issue had them curious about how many emojis are actually in iOS. The answer they found was 4,000.

Among the responses, someone even pointed out that the error page was disappointingly underwhelming. A reply stated that Google crashes so infrequently that they didn't bother making it presentable.

Cool Google Searches to Cope for Missing the Crash

If you're one of the people who never got to try the server error for yourself, then here are a couple of Google tricks from SurreyLive that might satisfy your curiosity.

  • Google the word "tilt" or "askew" and it will result in tilting sideways.

  • Try searching "Google gravity" and then click "I'm feeling lucky." This will result in the search bar and the buttons falling at the bottom of the screen.

  • Search for "anagram," and you will see the usual results like definitions and examples. But if you look just below the search bar, the suggestion would say "Did you mean: nag a ram."

  • Type in "Do a barrel roll" and upon pressing enter, the entire page would actually roll. It's likely that you have heard or done this before, but it's still fun to try it out again for old times' sake.

  • If you're a fan of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. then you'll like this one. If you enter the characters' names in the search bar and click the icon beside their names, the page will show you animated references depending on which character you type in. For example, when you type in "Phoebe Buffay" and click on her icon, a cat covered in suds will appear at the bottom of the screen, and "Smelly Cat" starts playing.
