EA Unveils ‘Next-Gen’ Sims Game; Sounds Like a Live-Service One

The next generation of The Sims is now in development.

Electronic Arts (EA) and Maxis have recently revealed "Project Rene," a reimagining of The Sims that provides new ways to play on a "next-gen" creative platform.

It is unclear if Project Rene will be the next installment of The Sims as the project is still in a very early stage of development.

The Sims 'Project Rene' Features And Details

Maxis mentioned in its "Behind the Sims Summit" and its announcement that its next-generation The Sims game, codenamed Project Rene, will represent the renaissance and rebirth of the franchise.

According to the popular game developer, the game will stay true to what The Sims has always been while "fundamentally evolving" how Sims think and behave. It will also provide a reimagining of The Sims' formula, giving players even more ways to play, like having more creative tools to unleash their imagination and tell meaningful stories, per The Verge.

To do so, Maxis is experimenting with the game's creative tools, which Maxis revealed in the live stream, to offer more flexibility for building and decorating in-game.

A prime example of these new creative tools is the ability to change not only patterns and colors but also the shapes of the objects used when building and decorating in-game, per Video Games Chronicle.

As such, in Project Rene, furniture customization not only involves changing patterns and colors but also editing furniture piece-by-piece, like adjusting the design and shape of the footboard of a bed and changing the color and design of individual cushions, per IGN

The game is also capable of being played on both PC and mobile devices, with Maxis saying that it is giving players the ability to play the game across supported devices.

Maxis also revealed that saved games would be accessible across all supported devices, provided they are transferred to the device of the player's choosing. As such, a player can transfer a saved game created on a PC to their mobile device and vice versa.

Another thing worth noting is that players can choose whether to play the game solo, just like the previous installments of the game or collaborate with others online. Specifically, players of Project Rene can work together in building and decorating houses and lots through online multiplayer rather than having one of them share their screen to get advice, per Polygon.

It is unknown if multiplayer mode will let players play together online and have their sims interact with each other.

The combination of cross-platform access, the transferring of saved files, and online multiplayer sounds like Project Rene is likely to be a live-service game with the ability to go single-player anytime.

Fans of The Sims should expect updates about Project Rene through Maxis' social media channels, as well as opportunities to voice their opinion regarding the game's content.

"We're striving to go above and beyond in terms of transparency and creating opportunities for players to share their thoughts about what we're creating over the next few years," Maxis said.

What Does This Mean For The Sims 4?

As Project Rene is still in its early stages of development, players of The Sims 4 can look forward to new content for the game, such as packs, Kits, and Delivery Express drops in the foreseeable future.

Project Rene is not expected to be released for several years, which is understandable given the longevity of The Sims 4.
