Mozilla Firefox’s Latest Update Fixes Abrupt Crash Issue on Windows 11 — Here’s What We Know

Mozilla Firefox is now as stable as before on Windows 11.

Mozilla recently launched an update that finally fixes Firefox's incessant crashes and hangs following the latest Windows 11 version update.

The update is now available to download for all users, but those who wish not to can implement a workaround fix to prevent Firefox from abruptly closing after opening, per Bleeping Computer.

Mozilla Firefox 106.0.3 Update Details

Mozilla mentioned in the release notes for the latest Firefox update, 106.0.3, that it comes with a fix to the app's issue of immediately crashing or hanging when some users open it.

Additionally, it had a fix for an incompatibility issue with the new Windows 11 22H2 OS update that causes the web browser to hang when copying text on a web page where Windows 11's Suggested Actions clipboard feature is enabled.

The problems Firefox's update fixed started happening when some of its users tried using the web browser after updating their computers to the latest Windows 11 update, version 22H2, where the Suggested Actions clipboard is enabled by default.

Some users reported that Firefox started crashing on startup, rendering the web browser unusable, while others said that the web browser hanged for some time before regaining functionality.

A user named Derrick Liu described the problem, saying that Firefox freezes for over 20 seconds when it encounters the issue, per his post at Bugzilla. During that time, the entire window (chrome, viewport) is unresponsive to their input.

Even though Firefox is unresponsive, it appears to be functional even while hanging as video and animation continue playing. After some time, the browser becomes usable again.

Finally, Liu found that this recovery time is dependent on the number of extensions loaded on Firefox, as their default profile can freeze for minutes before regaining functionality.

Users that have downloaded and updated their copy of Firefox have reported that the update does fix the issues that popped up after Windows 11's latest OS update, with users enabling their Suggested Action feature again after doing so, per MS Power User

How To Download Update Or Implement Workaround

Firefox users who wish to check if they already have its latest update can do so by selecting Menu and then clicking on "help," per GHacks. After which, click "About Mozilla Firefox" to see what version they currently have, as it runs a check for updates when opened.

When it does find a new update to download, the web browser will download and install it automatically.

However, for those who wish to get a workaround, disabling the Suggested Actions feature can fix Firefox temporarily. Follow these instructions to do so:

  1. Open the Start menu and type Clipboard" on the search bar.
  2. Select Clipboard settings from the results that pop out. Doing so will open the system Clipboard settings window.
  3. Find "Suggested Actions" and toggle the switch next to it to switch it off.
