Apple Adds Tribute to Pelé in Brazilian Homepage

Long live the king!

Apple recently changed the appearance of its Brazilian homepage to add a tribute to legendary soccer player Pele, who passed away from complications due to colon cancer at age 82, per the official website of the Olympics.

Pele is often regarded as one of the greatest players to have graced the sport of soccer, with his native Brazil naming him a "national treasure."

Apple's Brazilian homepage took a more solemn atmosphere following the death of Pele on Dec. 29. The once bright and graphic webpage featuring Apple's signature flair is replaced with a soccer ball wearing a crown on a black background with the years "1940 - 2022" written below it.

These years denote Pele's birth and death years, marking 82 years of greatness for the legendary soccer player.

Not much can be gleamed on Apple's Brazilian homepage, but it is still normally functioning.

Pele Life, Achievements, Death

Pele, formally known by his birth name, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, was born to soccer player Dondinho and Celeste Arantes on Oct. 23, 1940, with Donhinho being his mentor and trainer during his early years, per The Famous People.

Despite the advantages of having a soccer player for a father, Pele had a difficult start in his career. Major club teams in the city of So Paulo rejected him after he played for a minor league club, per the Encyclopedia Britannica.

However, he had his big break when he joined the Santos Football Club in 1956, and from then on, won nine Sao Paulo league championships as the team's inside left forward.

His list of achievements didn't stop there. He made his international debut in 1957 at the age of 16 when he became the youngest to score for Brazil during the game against Argentina at the Maracana, per Sportskeeda.

In 1958, Pele and his teammates won Brazil's first FIFA World Cup win, with the team scoring 5-2 against Sweden in the Swedish FIFA World Cup, per the official FIFA website.

During this event, Pele made his name known through his outstanding performance and winning the game for Brazil, drawing the world's attention further.

After this, the Brazilian government named him a national treasure to prevent Pele from being signed over to European clubs and ensure he would remain in Brazil.

He eventually won both the Liberatores Cup and Intercontinental Club Cup in 1962 and 1963, respectively.

He also became Brazil's Sports Minister for three years - from 1995 to 1998.

Pele was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021 but had the tumor removed that same year. Unfortunately, his health deteriorated in November, which had him readmitted to Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Pele's passing is a loss to Brazilians the world over. He was known for being an Ambassador against racism and for supporting organizations to fight poverty, per 9to5Mac.

Rest in Peace, Pele.
