Gears of War is getting its own tabletop card game soon.

Steamforged Games has announced that the card game it was developing based on the Gears of War universe will soon be available to gamers sometime in 2023 - almost three years since the company first announced it.

The popular tabletop game developer previously announced in 2020 it had partnered with Microsoft and The Coalition to create the tabletop card game in question, which was supposed to be out in the same year, per the official Gears of War website.

Gears of War Tabletop Card Game Details

Steamforged Games didn't say much about Gears of War: The Card Game other than its general release date in its announcement on Twitter. However, Comicbook Gaming mentioned that the game seems to be based on the original trilogy, featuring the prominent characters during those games, such as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago.

Members of The COG aren't the only ones present in the tabletop game. It also features a deck dedicated to The Locust Horde, with Uzil Raam being one of the more prominent ones present in the game.

Aside from the characters involved, the cards in the game display a character's attack and defense values on the card's midsection and what looks like movement points in the top left corner.

Much like the main games, cover has an effect on both sides of the game, with one card named "high Wall" present in both decks. However, grenade cards could get through them to flush anyone out of their protective cover, per Board Game Geek.

With the game's decks in mind, two players can play the tabletop card game version of the popular video game series, with one playing as The COG while the other takes the side of The Locust Horde.

DualShockers adds that the card game could probably be split into different chapters, allowing both players to update their decks and build them as they progress through the game. However, to defeat the other side, players need to show creativity and strategic prowess to make the most of what they have in their respective decks, with the game requiring them to adjust their tactics on the go during gameplay, much like its video game counterpart.

Gears Of War: The Card Game 2020 Reveal

Interestingly, the game was supposed to be sometime during the second half of 2020, specifically during the fall and winter of that year. It was first seen in action at the Gears 5 Esports Mexico City Major that took place on March 6-8, 2020, giving gamers a taste of what the tabletop card game has to offer.

However, any news of the game became nonexistent during the last two years, with the game only resurfacing recently.

Regardless, gamers can look forward to an exciting pastime to kill time with while waiting for Gears of War 6, which Epic Games could be announcing soon if the card game's sudden appearance has to say anything about it.
