Apple to Release HomePod Mini Software Updates

Apple may have different plans in store for its HomePod mini.

The Cupertino-based tech giant is reportedly not "actively working" on a new HomePod mini, scrapping any plans on developing and releasing a new model any time soon.

Apple released the current HomePod mini in October 2020 and has yet to release a new model since then.

New Apple HomePod Mini Development Details

Apple is not yet keen on replacing its current HomePod mini offering. According to Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, the tech giant could only see itself updating the current HomePod mini's software than making a new one.

Gurman noted that the latest HomePod model doesn't have any major new functions that aren't already in the current HomePod Mini. As such, there is no obvious reason to develop and release a new HomePod mini model. Instead, Apple is more likely to release software updates for the current HomePod mini to address its shortcoming involving Siri and app integration, as adjustments to them are probably sorely needed, per Engadget.

"Sure, it would be nice to get more colors, a cheaper price, and better sound and microphones, but the real improves need to be made on the back end - with Siri and app integration," Gurman wrote.

Apple's probable change of direction goes against Gurman's Aug. 2022 Power On report where he reported that Apple was considering a new model of the HomePod mini in the future, per MacRumors. However, he did not disclose a specific timeframe or details as to what the new HomePod's features will be.

Gurman did say that the new HomePod mini was unlikely to be "super-impressive" due to it having only minor changes to the 2020 model. This statement is in line with what he reported in his latest Power On report.

Forbes' David Phelan is of the same mind as Gurman regarding the new HomePod mini. According to Phelan's report, the capabilities of the HomePod mini are mostly on par with the new larger HomePod apart from its audio quality.

As such, Phelan finds it unlikely that Apple would want to put a HomePod mini ahead of its larger HomePod so soon after the release of the HomePod's second-gen model, which it released on Jan. 18.

However, Phelan said that HomePod mini users should look forward to new HomePod mini colors should there be a new model in the future.

Apple HomePod mini Capabilities

Apple's HomePod mini comes with "impressive sound, the intelligence of Siri to get things done, and a smart home experience that offers comfort and convenience without complexity."

The HomePod mini is equipped with Apple's S5 chip, advanced software, and the same acoustic principles used in the HomePod to analyze music played and apply "complex tuning models" to optimize loudness. The HomePod mini also adjusts the dynamic range and controls the movement of the driver and passive radiators in real-time.

Thanks to Siri's intelligence, the HomePod mini can deliver a personalized and integrated experience for iPhone users. This feature allows Apple's virtual assistant to tailor music and podcasts to their preferences and respond to personal requests like accessing messages, reminders, and notes based on who is speaking.

Last but not least is the HomePod mini's smart home controls that make turning off smart lights, changing the temperature, locking the doors, or setting a scene easier than ever with simple voice commands. Its new intercom system provides a way for family members to connect with each other at home, allowing them to send an Intercom message to each other as if they're right beside them.
