Apple Releases App to Test Out Car Key Feature

Apple launched a feature that allows iPhone users to use their smartphones to unlock their vehicles. However, the compatibility is very limited and has only been available recently for other cars aside from BMWs. The Car Key Test will determine compatibility with other vehicles.

The Car Key Test was added to the App Store recently. Although it is being distributed through Apple's developer account, the app is currently unlisted. To view the app, you will have to do it through the direct link, since it won't be available through the App Store search or account page.

Car manufacturers can use the app to test the Car Key feature integration with their vehicles. Aside from testing, Apple says that the app will also allow the companies to validate requirements for the certification process in adopting the feature, according to 9To5Mac.

So far, the feature has only been available for car manufacturers like BMW, Hyundai, and Kia. The Car Key Tester app could be Apple's way of expanding the adoption of its app, creating a way for users to unlock or start the car, as well as share the keys of vehicle access.

The app will provide a series of instructions in order for the manufacturers or vehicle owners to conduct the test. They will have to tap on "Done" after completing each step. Should the test fail, it will also indicate that through the result details status.

Wallet App and Its Uses

The Car Key feature is already a big feature by itself, but the Wallet app is capable of more than just that. It can also be used for unlocking other places like your home, your workplace, and even your hotel room, conveniently with a single app.

Not only can you unlock or car using the app, but you may also start it using your iPhone or Apple Watch. However, you can only use Apple Watches that are Series 6 or later, and of course, your vehicle should be compatible with the app.

Using Ultra Wideband, the app provides precise spatial awareness. This prevents you from locking your iPhone or Apple Watch inside the car. The feature also won't allow you to start your car when the device is left outside.

You can also use the Wallet app to unlock your home, provided that you use HomeKit-compatible smart locks. You can only do so using supported iPhones or Apple Watches starting from the Series 4 or later.

You can add the home key to the Apple Wallet app using the Home app on your iPhone. Once you have the home key feature on your Apple Watch or iPhone, all you have to do is place the device near the smart lock to open it.

You can do the same for your workplace given that you work at a participating corporate office. You just have to add your employee badge and present the badge to the readers in your office. The feature works on an iPhone or an Apple Watch from Series 3 or later.

It also works for participating hotels by adding your room key to Apple Wallet from the app of the hotel. You can check in remotely and unlock your room the same way you would your home or your participating office.
