Microsoft Word Introduces Keyboard Shortcut To Paste Plain Text

Microsoft is now allowing users to paste something as plain text in Word, removing any formatting that it may have had when originally copied.

Currently coming out to Word beta users on both Mac and PC, it is the same Control + Shift + V shortcut that is used in many other apps, according to The Verge.

The Keyboard Shortcut Saves Users Time And Effort From Formatting Manually

Finally, Microsoft is improving Microsoft Office by including a keyboard shortcut beside the MS Word shortcut keys.

It can be remembered that Word has long allowed users to remove formatting from whatever they had previously pasted.

This is done with the help of the tiny ribbon that appears and provides users the choice to preserve the original formatting, match the formatting of their document, or use plain text.

Some people might actually prefer this option, but for some others, the Ctrl + Shift + V shortcut is confusing and unnatural.

Nonetheless, being able to use the Control + Shift + V shortcut to skip a step could be a good convenience for individuals who have ANSI-layout keyboards.

This is particularly true if people are accustomed to using it from other apps like Teams, Slack, or Chrome, The Verge claims.

Although users have been able to add a shortcut for plain text paste using the keyboard macros system, many more people might utilize it if it was included by default.

Additionally, Microsoft is attempting to make it accessible to all users through its PowerToys initiative, which also adds a ton of other useful features to Windows.

If users have a Mac, a software like Pure Paste can similarly mimic this capability, but it modifies the default Command + V shortcut such that it pastes plaintext instead of formatting, necessitating an additional step for pasting with formatting.

Microsoft Is Following Industry Standard In Response To Customer Feedback

In a recent blog post, Microsoft stated that the industry standard for keyboard shortcuts has changed from Word's original implementation of these functions.

How To Geek writes that it can be unpleasant when Ctrl+Shift+V does not paste simple text because users are used to this behavior.

The Word team has been informed of this issue by users, and as a direct result, it is changing keyboard shortcuts.

"Accessibility is a priority for Word, and we want to make the cut, copy, paste experience as seamless as possible," Microsoft explains in its blog.

As a result, a standard Ctrl+Shift+V keyboard shortcut is currently being developed for Word, which functions identically like the shortcut in Google Docs, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, and many other apps.

Microsoft is also experimenting with further adjustments to Word's keyboard shortcuts, including the Copy Format Painter, Paste Format Painter, and the copyright sign keys, to bring them into line with the majority of contemporary software.

On Windows, the Paste Special menu will be available by pressing Alt+H+V+S instead of Ctrl+Alt+V, whereas on Mac, there will not be any keyboard shortcuts for it, How To Geek says.
