Reddit Outage

Reddit published a timeline detailing the system outage, showing that it went offline around 3:18 p.m. EST and were working to identify the issue. Within the hour, the problem has been identified which was determined to be caused by an internal systems issue.

According to the site's historical uptime in the past 60 days, it saw two of its components experience a major outage on March 14, 2023, while three other components experienced a partial outage.

The company worked on a fix that was identified almost two hours after they discovered what caused the outage, which was implemented more than an hour and a half later. Reddit updated the timeline an hour later stating that they were "slowly allowing things to ramp back up."

Although, they were still experiencing issues stemming from its internal systems. By 8:17 p.m. EST, which is an hour after their fourth update, Reddit listed that they were almost back and that they were monitoring how the fix is panning out.

It wasn't until 8:41 p.m. EST that the issue was resolved and systems were back in order. Based on the timeline, the outage caused by the internal systems issue lasted for about five hours before Reddit's website went back up.

At the time of the outage, there were more than 60,000 people who reported that they cannot access the website, as mentioned in The Verge. Although Reddit reported that it was an internal system issue, they did not go into specifics about what caused it.

Past Outages

Reddit also had a major outage back on February 15th, 2023, wherein its home feed was not loading correctly. It affected website access for desktops which lasted for 34 mins, and comment processing for about 21 minutes.

Just five days before that, the website also experienced a longer outage which lasted three hours and 44 minutes. The partial outage affected the access to desktop and mobile web, as well as access through the native Reddit app.

The mobile web and the native mobile app's search were degraded. The same could be said about Reddit's desktop web access, but it also experienced issues with its top-year subreddit feeds, which were first identified four days prior.
