Google officially announces unlocked Nexus 5 with Android 4.4 KitKat

Google has officially announced the Nexus 5, which had been leaking on what seemed like an almost daily basis. Let's take a look at Google's latest flagship smartphone.

LG was in charge of manufacturing the Nexus 5, just as it previously did with the Nexus 4. The manufacturer is well-known for the quality of its displays and the Nexus 5 definitely does not disappoint in this department. It boasts a pixel density of 445 pixels-per-inch on its 4.95-inch Full HD display. It has a higher pixel density than its two main rivals, just beating the Samsung Galaxy S4, which has a pixel density of 441 and topping Apple's iPhone 5s, which packs in 326 pixels-per-inch.

It is also the first device to ship with Google's latest version of Android, Android 4.4 Kitkat. The update brings a few new features and has been optimized to use less memory, promising faster performance and better battery life. The Nexus 5 brings the high-end specs we've come to expect from Google's smartphones and offers it all in an affordable no-contract smartphone.

Aside from featuring a 4.95-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display with a pixel density of 445 pixels-per-inch (ppi) and running the very latest Android 4.4 KitKat, the Nexus 5 is powered by a 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, an Adreno 330 GPU (graphics processing unit) and 2GB of RAM.

Google has included an 8-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS) and improved HDR+ mode, as well as a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video chat and ability to record 30FPS 1080p video. The smartphone's wireless capabilities reportedly include a 4G LTE radio, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/nc, Bluetooth 4.0 with Bluetoooth Low Energy (LE) support, NFC, and GPS. The Nexus 5 will be offered in 16GB and 32GB internal storage variants and use a 2,300mAh battery. It measures in at 69.17mm wide, 137.84mm tall, and 8.59mm thick and weighs 130g.

The Nexus 5 is available for purchase now through Google Play unlocked, costing $349 for the 16GB version and $399 for the 32GB version. The smartphone comes in a choice of black or white.
