8 Most Surprising 'Game of Thrones' Plot Twists

"Game of Thrones" is one of the biggest shows out there. Its success has led to existing and possibly more spin-offs. Aside from the complex and unique storyline, what makes it so great is how the stories unfold. Fans are always at the edge of their seats because it defies normal plot points. Here are a few twists that no one would've expected.

1. Ned Stark's Beheading

The show was still relatively new at this point, and no one knew about the show's tendency to kill off the main characters yet. "GoT" fans held out hope for the Lord of Winterfell, hoping that the beloved character will find a way out of King's Landing alive. Of course, their perspectives changed the moment Ned Stark was executed.

2. The Red Wedding

The red wedding was perhaps among the scenes that shocked the show's viewers the most, as it took many of the loved characters in the show. Catelyn Stark had warned Robb of the consequences of betraying a promise to someone like Walder Frey, and his following his heart led to the death of his wife, mother, dire wolf, and his own.

3. Shireen Being Sacrificed

Melisandre, also known as the Red Woman, has been known to practice magic in the name of the Lord of Light. While we already know that she takes extreme measures to put Stannis Baratheon on the throne, it was still unexpected how the "rightful" king sacrificed his own daughter for his and his men's survival.

4. The Kingslayer Did the Right Thing

Many fans rolled their eyes every time Jamie Lannister was smug about killing Aerys Targaryen, also known as The Mad King. However, it became clear that he actually did it to spare hundred of thousands of people from being burned alive. He painfully recounted the events to Brienne of Tarth, revealing that his actions were motivated by compassion and not greed.

5. The Explosion of the Great Sept of Baelor

It's already been established that Cersei is a despicable human being, but to go as far as bombing the Great Sept of Baelor to kill her enemies along with other people was a different kind of evil. Wildfire took many characters that fans grew to love such as Margaery Tyrell, along with Loras and their father.

6. Arya Stark's Revenge on Walder Frey

Arya was hellbent on crossing off the names of those who wronged her and her family, but no one would've expected that she would do so in such a devious manner when it came to Walder Frey. Arya served him pie, revealing that it was actually filled with the flesh of his sons, and then eventually slitting his throat.

7. The Night King Killing and Turning Viserion

The Night King is evidently a formidable enemy, but no one would've expected that he would take down a dragon just by throwing a lance made of ice. To make matters worse, Viserion was not only dead but also turned, giving the Night King a dragon to add to its already powerful army.

8. Daenerys Targaryen Goes on a Rampage

Throughout the series, Daenerys Targaryen was painted as a fair ruler who wanted to abolish slavery and treat her subjects with kindness, which is why it was uncharacteristic when she snapped and decided to burn King's Landing to the ground.

Most of the fanbase expressed that it was a poorly written-ending to a great show. Some would even argue that it ruined the show entirely, pointing out how building the image of the Mother of Dragons was all for nothing.
