WWDC 2023: Apple's New Privacy, Security Features You Should Know About

Apple has just wrapped up its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), and it has been a venue of a number of exciting and explosive reveals and announcements. One of which is the announcement of new security and privacy features that Apple is offering to its users. 

Among these features are a Lockdown Mode, Safari Private Browsing, and Communication Safety.

Here is what you have to know about Apple's new privacy and safety features.

Communication Safety 

One of the new safety features from Apple is known as Communication Safety. 

According Apple, this feature, which is "designed to warn children when receiving or sending photos in Messages that contain nudity, now covers video content in addition to still images." 

This feature applies when children send and receive media via AirDrop or a FaceTime video message. It will likewise keep children safe when they are using the Phone app in order to receive a Contact Poster and the Photos picker to choose media to send. 

Lockdown Mode

Another feature announced during Apple's WWDC 2023 event is the expansion of the Lockdown Mode. 

Specifically, the expansion aims to provide "even more protections for those who may be targeted by mercenary spyware because of who they are or what they do." Lockdown Mode will be supported on watchOS, according to Apple. 

NameDrop

By now, you are more than familiar with AirDrop. Thanks to Apple, there is also what is called the NameDrop. 

So what does NameDrop do? According to Apple, it is actually a new AirDrop experience that lets users "hold their iPhone near another to share their contact information with only their intended recipients." It likewise gives users the option to choose the specific contact details they want to share and what they want to keep private from everyone else. 

Safari Private Browsing

Updates have also been made to Safari Private Browsing. Among these are advanced tracking and fingerprinting protections that are designed to stop websites using the latest tracking techniques from tracking or identifying a user's device. The new updates also enable Private Browsing to lock when not in use. 

Link tracking protection has likewise been added to Safari Private Browsing.

Sensitive Content Warning

Apple has also introduced optional features, including the Sensitive Content Warning feature. This feature will help users avoid seeing undesirable photos and videos, specifically those that feature nudes.

This feature can be enabled when using Messages, receiving an AirDrop, participating in a FaceTime video message, and when receiving a Contact Poster on the Phone app. 

Other New Privacy, Safety Features from Apple
