Twitter’s New CEO Shares Plan To Change the Platform

Twitter's new CEO wants to change the platform.

The new Chief Twit, Linda Yaccarino, recently stated that she wants to make Twitter "the world's most accurate real-time information source" and the world's communication hub.

Yaccarino first started her job as Twitter's new CEO a week ago after Twitter owner (and Chief Technology Officer) Elon Musk announced her appointment around seven weeks ago.

Linda Yaccarino's Vision For Twitter

Yaccarino mentioned in a Twitter thread that the platform is on a mission to become the world's most accurate real-time information source and "a global town square for communication," mirroring Musk's wishes to turn Twitter into something like a "digital town square."

You may recall that Musk said that the US needs an "everything app" where users can make transactions like shopping, paying, and messaging in one platform, similar to how WeChat works; he believes Twitter is that app despite the work needed to turn the platform into that.

Yaccarino stated in her thread that the company has the opportunity to reach across aisles, create new partnerships, celebrate new voices, and build something together that can change the world. To make this vision a reality, Yaccarino said the company needs to think big, transform, and do it all together with the users.

She explained that the global town square requires transformation to help drive civilization forward through an unfiltered exchange of information and open dialogue about the things that matter to people.

As such, she wants Twitter to provide users the opportunity and the freedom to speak their minds - the founding principle of Twitter 2.0.

Yaccarino then says that the company's first principles are questioning [its assumptions] and building something new from the ground up - a rare chance to put a new future into the hands of every person, partner, and creator on Earth, according to her.

"That's exactly why I'm here - with all of YOU," Yaccarino added. "Let's dig our heels in (4 inches or flat) and build Twitter 2.0 together."

Analyst's Concerns

A quick look into Yaccarino's vision for Twitter 2.0 shows that she wants the platform to focus on communication where people can say what they want without being afraid of censorship. However, its users must know and feel that the town square is not biased, according to Ray Wang, the chief executive of Silicon Valley-based research firm Constellation, per the BBC.

Unfortunately, Musk's right-wing views, along with his reinstatement of ring-wing accounts and the loose content moderation on the platform, drove away advertisers, as evidenced by the advertiser exodus following Musk's takeover of the company in late 2022.

As such, to balance the need to provide an unbiased platform to users, Wang said that advertisers need to know what to expect from Musk's digital town square in terms of user content and engagement.

For this, Wang believes that Yaccarino is the right person for the job as she can balance out Elon and look him in the eye since he respects her.
