Threads Account Could Be Deleted Without Affecting Instagram Soon

It will soon be possible to delete your Threads account without it affecting your Instagram one.

Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently published a post on the newly launched Threads platform, saying the company is developing a way to allow users who wish to delete their Threads account without the risk of deleting their Instagram account.

Meta launched its Twitter rival app Threads on July 6 to much success thanks to its Instagram integration.

Instagram's Solution To Account Deletion

Mosseri mentioned in his Threads post that he's been getting some questions about account deletion on Threads. He clarified that users can deactivate their Threads account, which hides their profile and content, set them as private accounts, and delete individual Threads posts.

However, he mentioned that since Instagram is powering (integrated into) Threads, an Instagram and Threads account are considered one and the same. This means that a user deleting their Threads account will also delete their Instagram account.

Thankfully, Mosseri revealed that Instagram is working on launching a way that allows Threads users to delete their accounts separately - without the process leading to the deletion of their Instagram accounts.

It is unclear if Mosseri meant that Threads and Instagram will be separate platforms soon since people insterested in signing up for Threads would need to log in with their Instagram account and that it is impossible to do so without one as of press time. However, Instagram could create a way to let users delete their Threads accounts without the process affecting their Instagram accounts and Threads' integration with Instagram.

Instagram Integration Issue

Threads' first day is successful - ten million users signed up for the Twitter rival thanks to its Instagram integration, which helped people with the sign-up process.

For those unaware, Threads is Meta's free microblogging app to rival Twitter. Developed by the Instagram team, it allows users to post up to 500 characters long and include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length, per Instagram.

Threads users can choose to follow the same accounts they do on Instagram and find more people who care about the same things they do. Twitter users looking for a Twitter alternative to move to following Elon Musk's changes to the platform will find Threads familiar - it appears just like Twitter, but it uses Instagram's icons like the heart icon, the comment icon, the share icon, and a new report icon.

However, the integration with Instagram also has its downsides. According to a Tech Crunch report, Meta explained in a "Supplemental privacy Policy" that Threads users may deactivate their profile at any time, but deleting it -rather than deactivating - will also delete their Instagram account.

Meta believes that a Threads profile is part of a user's Instagram account thanks to its integration with Instagram - a belief that shocked many users at launch.
