Retro gaming is gaining popularity in recent years and refers to playing video games from the past. This comeback of games from the 80s and 90s was fueled by nostalgic TV series such as Stranger Things.

These retro games appeal to the nostalgia of older gamers who grew up playing them and younger gamers who discovered them because of pop culture references. Hence, gaming companies are developing games that offer the charm and nostalgia of classic video games. Read on to learn why retro games have become popular and examples of the best comebacks.

The Power of Nostalgia

Gen X and early millennials are now in their 40s and 50s and reminiscing the old times of their childhood. There has been a wave of nostalgia for the 80s and 90s, which also happens to be the golden era of arcades and early video games; these comebacks have been showcased in TV series, toys, and even fashion comebacks.

Unsurprisingly, this nostalgia trend would bring back the video games we used to play then. There is an emotional connection and memories associated with video games for people who grew up in the 80s and 90s. Memories of childhood freedom bring adults to try to relive these moments by playing the same games they used to play as children.

Popular games like Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda, and Sonic the Hedgehog are having a comeback in new versions of their game consoles. For example, Sonic The Hedgehog is available for Nintendo Switch.

Which Gen Xr or Millennial doesn't remember playing endless hours of Windows computer games? You could spend hours playing classics like Minesweeper and Solitaire. After Microsoft discontinued it from their operating systems, Solitaire gamers looked for a replacement. Fortunately, there are new and improved versions of those classics.

Papaya Games Solitaire Cash, for example, is a new take on a beloved classic that allows you to play with other gamers. You can take on other players and gain real money prizes.

Why Play Retro Games?

Millions of modern games are available as applications in the Google Play Store, Apple Store, or gaming consoles like PlayStation and Xbox. With all these offers, you may ask what advantage retro games have over modern ones.  Here is a short list:

  • They are simpler - Most retro games follow simple rules, making them better for beginners.

  • They are seen as more pure and authentic -  These games focus on play and simplicity instead of advanced computer graphics.

  • They are more affordable - Many retro games are much cheaper than modern games, which makes them more accessible.

  • They are more available - Younger people that want to try classic games can do so by playing retro games through emulators -programs that allow the user to play classic games on a modern device-. New releases are often available on multiple devices.

  • Appeal to the sense of community - Multiple online communities are dedicated to retro gaming. These multi-generational communities share tips and compete against each other, reliving the spirit of these games.

Where can you play retro games?

You have the option of buying a second-hand gaming console. For example, you can buy an Atari Flashback on eBay, Amazon, or specialised game stores. Atari released a 50th Anniversary edition with 130 built-in classic games. If you prefer to play them on new devices, many are available for smart TVs or modern consoles, like Nintendo classic games.

Many retro games are also available online, via emulator websites, or to install on your computer. For example, you can download the new Minesweeper to a PC or Laptop. Also, new versions of old classics are available as phone applications, such as the Solitaire we mentioned above.

Retro games are here to stay.

To summarise, retro gaming is making a comeback fueled by nostalgia, affordability and a sense of community. These games appeal equally to older gamers who grew up with them and a younger public who just discovered them now. The simplicity and thrill of retro games can survive and thrive through generations.
