8 Internet Terms You Should Know If You’re Frequently Online

Nowadays, you and most of the people you know probably spend hours of your time browsing the internet and scrolling through social media. You might've encountered some tech-savvy words that you don't recognize that maybe you should know about.

1. UI

You might seen the acronym UI thrown around in some conversations. It's short for User Interface and it refers to the elements in a system that allows you to interact with it. The better the interface of a site or a device, the easier and more comfortable it is to use, and for visuals as well.

2. API

Yet another acronym, API stands for Application Programming Interface. API makes it possible for programs or platforms to interact with one another. You might be using it on a daily basis without even knowing it. Through APIs, it's possible for you to share posts from Reddit on your Facebook wall.

3. Malware

As dangerous as it is, it's alarming that a lot of people on the internet are still not aware of malware. In case you don't know yet, it is software that is meant to corrupt your data or allow threat actors to gain access to your computer. With that, hackers might be able to steal sensitive information from you, which goes without saying, is a bad situation.

4. Phishing

Phishing is what happens when hackers or threat actors manage to infect your computer with malware. That or fraudsters will try to acquire your data by convincing you that they are legitimate personnel from companies. Through social engineering, they will try to ask you for your data, which will then be used for all sorts of fraudulent activities. 

5. VPN

Short for Virtual Private Network, a VPN allows you to create a secure connection to the internet. Since the connection will be encrypted, you can be assured that your sensitive data will not fall into the wrong hands. The security measure, your traffic cannot be viewed by unauthorized people, therefore keeping you incognito.

6. Bugs

Much like real life, bugs can get quite annoying on the web as well. If you feel like a website or a social media app is not working as it should, you're probably experiencing a bug in the system. For example, when you try to publish a comment but it doesn't appear after you submit it, it could be a bug. These are usually fixed when the company issues an update.

7. Microblogging

Currently, there are several sites where you can microblog such as X (formerly known as Twitter), Threads, Mastodon, and more. It's important to know this term especially if you're looking for sites that will suit your microblogging needs and preferences. For example, if you want a freely accessible edit button, you might want to opt for Threads.

8. Spam

Spam messages are usually sent out to several emails, and more often than not, they are simply annoying. Phishing emails also fall under this category, which means that yes, it can be dangerous too. The best way to deal with them is to just delete the message and block the sender.
