Google Play Movies & TV Ends its Run

Since October, Google has also removed the app from most of the smart TVs, Roku, and Android TV. The successful launch of Google TV paved the way for the company to transition its customers from Play Movies & TV.

By January 17, 2024, the app will officially cease to exist on Android TV and be used as a Shop tab only. Any devices that still have the app working will eventually lose access to it. Customers will be redirected to the YouTube app for continued access to purchased content.

Google is not the only company that will implement a refreshed TV app. Previously, Apple announced a new video strategy that will allow the company to expand its offers. It is expected that the refreshed Apple TV Plus will be released sometime this month.

Google Offers Alternative Viewing Options

Fortunately, customers will still be able to access all their previous purchases. For streaming devices powered by Android TV, the Shop tab will be available for them wherein they can select their previous purchases, and active rentals, or find new titles to buy.

Meanwhile, the YouTube app will be the new home for watching, buying, and renting new titles from Google for customers who own cable boxes or set-top boxes powered by Android TV. However, customers should check the availability of YouTube services in their area.

Similarly, YouTube will be the alternative viewing option when using a web browser to watch and rent movie titles. The changes are expected to roll out on different dates depending on the location.
