Medications for 'Excessive Screen Time' Costs the US Over $71 Billion Per Year, Study Says

Medications for symptoms of "excessive screen time" are costing Americans more than $71 billion each year, according to the latest study of the American Optometric Association.

The AOA reported nearly 70% of adult Americans, or 104 million people, in office jobs are more exposed to digital screens than any other professions.

Longer time in front of a screen for seven hours and more are expected to cause health-related issues, prompting more people to seek medical professionals for treatment.

If each of the affected persons visited an optometrist once every year, total costs would still rack up to $45.5 billion in production and $26.3 billion more for "well-being improvements."

The study was conducted in 2023 in collaboration with Deloitte Economics Institute.

AOA: Reduce Screen Time Exposure

To lessen the expenses of eye healthcare, the AOA recommends managing exposure to digital screens or employing various technology and equipment to lessen its harmful effects.

Minimizing the time in front of the screen can save Americans as much as $1,920 per person, as well as reduce risks of decreased productivity and "affect an individual's sleep quality and mental health."

The AOA continues with its national public awareness campaign to help Americans receive "comprehensive eye care" and educational resources for their well-being.

Eye Healthcare Remains a Privilege in the US

While relatively at a lower price compared to other healthcare systems, a regular vision exam can cost from $95 up to $200.

For many Americans, this cost is an expensive decision considering the increasing inflation in the country and the affordability of a maintenance product.

The AOA study has even revealed that only 55% of Americans experiencing symptoms from excessive screen time have ever visited a medical professional about their condition.
