Google Gemini Planned for a Re-Release in 'Next Couple of Weeks'

Google plans to re-release Gemini AI in the coming weeks after receiving backlash for generating historical figures as people of color, according to Google Deepmind CEO Demis Hassabis via Reuters.

The tech giant paused its AI tool last week after several users reported Gemini generating images of the founding fathers of America or World War II German soldiers with black skin tones.

Google has since apologized for the "inaccuracies" but did not provide the specifics on why such an incident occurred. The company has only released the rebranded Bard AI earlier this month.

Users can still use its image generation feature for non-human media, and asking the AI to do so is currently "against my policy because it can be harmful to use images of people without their consent."

The chatbot and navigation feature still works fine, as of press time.

Google Gemini has a History of Hallucinations, Issues

The recent incident with its image generation feature was not the first time Gemini, or before Bard, came under fire for inaccurate results.

Ahead of the Super Bowl LVIII, the AI "hallucinated" fake statistics of the game. Even during its first demo video, several watchers noticed that the tasks were scripted.

Google raised eyebrows before for speeding up the development of its AI to catch up with competitors despite concerns about the technology not being thoroughly tested.

Google Messages to Add Gemini AI

Although some of its features are under maintenance, Google Gemini is confirmed to be added to Google Messages soon, 9to5Google reported.

Gemini will reportedly appear as a new conversation tool to help "draft messages, brainstorm ideas, plan events, or simply have a fun conversation."

The chatbot will supposedly offer a 1:1 conversation via Google's RCS. However, there will be no end-to-end encryption, and the AI will access other chat logs and group messages.

The Gemini AI on Messages is reported to be launching first on the upcoming Pixel 6 phones, Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy Z Flip.

Google previously hinted it would introduce more advanced AI into Android phones. As of late, only Gemini is available to Android devices as an added feature rather than a separate app.
