AI technology is now seen as a tool for diplomacy and resolving human conflicts rather than to aid destruction, new research has claimed via Al Jazeera.
Sama'a Al-Hamdani, program director of Hala System, said that AI has the potential to help transform mediators "into powerhouses of efficiency and insight."
Hala System is a Washington-based software development firm focused on developing AI-powered tools for "advanced situational awareness for conflict management."
The introduction of AI into peace talks is seen as a way of reducing the chances of prejudices, fears and ideologies affecting negotiations amid armed conflicts and violence.
If the research proves to be successful, it can be used to prevent further deaths in the Russo-Ukraine War or the genocide happening in Gaza, the Uyghurs in China and the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
As of writing, more than 10,500 civilian Ukrainians have died since Russia's invasion in 2022. On the other hand, over 30,000 unarmed Palestinians have been killed by Israel following its air strikes since Oct. 7, 2023.
What is the Hala Systems?
The organization is headed and co-founded by John Jaeger, a former U.S. Department of State official whose previous work involved conflict stabilization and counterintelligence against violent extremism.
According to its studies, the company's digital solutions greatly increased estimated casualties by 20% to 27% in 2018.
Hala Systems has already worked with other tech institutions and organizations in the past to address threats from air strikes, human traffickers, illegal miners, poachers and hackers.
Hala System Warns of Possible Risk of AI Being Used to Instigate Conflicts
Despite its potential being a tool of peace, there is a higher risk of AI being abused to heighten conflict or help aid in creating weapons of destruction.
OpenAI, one of the leading AI firms in the world, earlier retracted its policies on preventing its technology from being used for military and weapon applications.
As of late, military agencies in the government have already announced new teams to handle AI-powered operations.
This is not to include the dangers of AI being used to automate disinformation, possibly deepening the gap between political oppositions or countries at odds with each other.
The shift in the government's attitude toward AI came as other countries also expanded their weaponry and defenses into AI technology.
