Game Developers Gradually Adapt to AI Advancements

Unity revealed that five trends are commonly seen in the gaming industry which included how developers are slowly adopting AI tools to save time. According to Triangle CEO and founder Timothy Vanherberghen, players these days have set high standards putting more pressure on devs.

"Studios need to make sure that they can actually reach the expectations of those players, and production becomes more costly and takes more time," he added.

Among the surveyed studios, most of them agree that the prototyping windows are short and that using AI has improved their delivery and operations.

Other trends such as diversifying revenue approaches, serving multi-platform supports, prioritizing multiplayer games, and extending game lifespan are seen as the current game changers in the industry.

Several game developers are not threatened by the power of AI, citing that the tools have increased productivity for studios. NPCs which often take time are also now done using AI tools.

Meanwhile, AI is still more commonly used in AR/VR and online multiplayer games compared to other genres like FPS, puzzles, and more.

However, some studios are lagging behind the AI adoption due to a lack of time and knowledge of new tools. There are also studios that showed reluctance to start using AI.

Unity's data for the report was drawn from the Unity Engine, Unity Cloud, and ironSource from Unity's portfolio of products. The company also surveyed 300 game developers who were invited to participate.
