Amazon MGM, Audible Collabs to Release More Podcast-Based TV Shows

Amazon MGM Studios is partnering with sister company Audible to bring more TV series based on the audio-streaming platform's exclusive podcasts.

First reported by Variety, the two entertainment divisions under the tech giant will collaborate to produce shows from Audible's popular scripted podcasts like "The Prophecy," "Hot White Heist," "Oracle" and "Nut Jobs."

Non-scripted titles like "Words+Music" and the singing show "Breakthrough" will also receive their respective on-screen adaptations. All series are expected to premier on Amazon's Prime Video and MGM+.

Audible Optimistic with TV Adaptation Venture

Rachel Ghiazza, Audible's chief content officer, said the collaboration is expected to help improve the streaming service's "commitment to accelerating the craft of storytelling."

The podcast adaptations are part of Amazon's decision to expand more on its original IP titles as it competes for streaming service dominance.

Although MGM said it has already started laying out plans for the shows, no clear date has yet been given when the series will be released.

Podcast-to-TV Adaptations Beginning to Gain Global Attention

Although series adaptations from podcasts have been going around for a while now, the prospect of having TV series from audio-content shows fully started last year following the good reception of "The Dropout" and "Dr. Death."

Amazon's move to release as many titles as it can marks the time that podcast-based shows have enough audience to gain additional support from the top brass.

It helped that many of the titles being adapted have similar structures with script dialogues making it easier for producers to build the shows for TV audiences.

So far, Amazon has been successful with "The Horror of Dolores Roach," a comedy-drama based on a podcast of the same name about a Latina surviving the rapidly changing cultures of Uptown Manhattan.
