Apple Short Hills in New Jersey, which employs 104 staff, is seeking unionization after Maryland became the first in the U.S. to vote for it.

The employees are currently represented by the Communications Workers of America which handles the petition to unionize the Apple retail store's workforce.

Apple Short Hills in New Jersey Aims for Unionization

Apple Retail Stores have been asking to be unionized in recent years. Almost two years ago, the Apple Store in Maryland made history for being the first retail location to vote in favor of forming a union.

Since then, a couple of Apple Stores around the U.S. have been processing unionization. One of which is the Apple Short Hills store, which filed its request with the National Labor Relations Board.

New Jersey is now part of retail stores in the U.S. that have voted to unionize. The current list includes stores in Oklahoma, the Maryland town of Towson, Atlanta, and St. Louis.

Apple Employees Seek Unionization to Ensure Benefits, Security Among Workers

In a statement, John Nagy, a member of the organizing committee explained that forming a union is "the best way to ensure all Apple workers receive the respect, pay, benefits and working conditions we deserve." The member also claimed that Apple has violated workers' rights around the country.

On the other hand, Apple has reportedly been trying to prevent more stores from unionizing. The company held meetings trying to reason out the risks of unionization and discouraging members from talking with union representatives.

Last year, the tech giant faced accusations of illegal anti-union practices and underwent a third-party audit of its labor practices.

As of writing, two Apple Retail Stores in the U.S. have successfully unionized, while there are three stores in the U.K.
