Ambient Lighting: Here’s How You Can Make Your Any Room Cozy

The lighting in a room can dramatically change the mood you're in. In fact, there are even dedicated studies about how various colors can trigger emotions. Soft and warm lighting tends to make us more relaxed and rested, so here's how you can apply ambient lighting to a room.

Using the Right Light Sources

Where your light comes from will define how the room will look as well, partly because the light sources can also be decorative. For instance, wall sconces can be elegant and have a unique light diffused among other light sources.

You can also use table lamps for added light, especially since ambient lighting isn't always the brightest. It would also give you more options if you install a dimmer, as it allows you to control the brightness, depending on what you will need the room for at certain times.

Finding the Right Bulb

If you're going for the traditional ambient lighting theme, you might want to go for Edison bulbs. Other than creating a cozy atmosphere in the room, they also last longer than most bulb types, so it's also a good economic decision in the long run.

Of course, there are also smart bulbs, some of which even have RGB options. This way, you won't have to install other light fixtures for brighter lighting, and you will have more options in terms of color, all of which you can control remotely.

Strategic Placement

There are a lot of factors to consider when placing your lights in a room. For instance, you might want to install light fixtures in corners to have an even light range for the whole room. You may also want to place one in areas where you need to do work.

Just make sure that the light is distributed so that there will be no dark spots. If the position of your fixtures does not align with your furniture placement, you can always add task lighting such as desk lamps or standing lamps.

Mind the Objects It Shines On

What people tend to miss is that it's not just the lighting itself that one should focus on, but the objects that are near it. For example, adding a plant near a light source might be beneficial in two ways: It will help the plant survive, and the way the light hits it could be a decorative element.

The same goes for wall displays. If you install sconces, you might want to add pictures and frames right on top of them. Just keep in mind that some bulbs emit warmth, which can damage photos and other objects with prolonged exposure.

Painting the Appropriate Colors

The paint on your wall contributes to how the room will feel, but also how light will reflect. Having darker walls means that the lighting will be absorbed and will therefore be distributed less throughout the room.

If you want a brighter room, you can adjust two things whether you paint the wall a brighter color or use bulbs that emit brighter light. Either way, you will you need to adjust one or the other to have sufficient light in the space.
