Nokia Lumia 635 Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone officially available through AT&T GoPhone prepaid service

The Nokia Lumia 635 Windows Phone 8.1 smartphone has officially gone on sale on AT&T's GoPhone prepaid service, available now for $99.

Microsoft's latest Windows Phone 8.1 mobile operating system brings notable improvements over previous versions of the OS and the Nokia Lumia 635 is one of the first smartphones to come rocking the latest OS out of the box.

Not too long ago, we reported that AT&T was gearing up to start offering the Nokia Lumia 635 through its GoPhone prepaid service. The carrier has now made good on its promise and the smartphone joined its portfolio on Friday, July 25, delivering a good performance on a budget.

The Nokia Lumia 635 is not the highest-end smartphone out there, but its mid-range specifications are more than decent for the budget-friendly price tag it carries.

Not only is the Lumia 635 among the first to boast Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box, but it's also the very first Lumia handset to pack a quad-core processor. AT&T now joins T-Mobile to offer the device in the U.S.

For those unfamiliar with the Nokia Lumia 635, the smartphone sports a 4.5-inch FWVGA display, a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and a microSD card slot for additional memory of up to 128GB. Other specifications include a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1,830 mAh battery to keep things up and running. On the software side, Windows Phone 8.1 will bring all of its goodies to the table, including the much-touted Cortana digital assistant. Cortana is Microsoft's answer to Microsoft's Siri and Google Now, but it has yet to make a global debut outside the U.S.

When it comes to pricing, the Nokia Lumia 635 costs just $99 on AT&T's GoPhone prepaid service, but it's worth pointing out that this is a limited-time offer. This is a promotional price that will be available only until Aug. 8, after which the Lumia 635 will cost $139.99 with no annual contract. AT&T is also offering the smartphone through its Next 18 plan for $5.84 per month or through Next 12 for $7 per month.
